The Fights
Who: Open, High Fantasy event
Where: Faire Grounds
When: The Faire
What: Brawls, wrestling, fisticuffs, fencing, sword tourneys all!
Rating: PG-13 likely

There was a great number of events to keep the crowds entertained when they were not browsing the market or sharing crafts and skills besides archery and jousting. The Fights.

The numerous contests could be easily joined, and unlike the jousting and sword and armor tourneys that required special equipment, there were many other tourneys that required none. Wrestling, for instance, required nothing but pants that did not fall off easily while trying to toss an opponent off the stage. One of the mudpits featured a riotous game with four teams of barely clothed men and women fighting over four flags and trying to get them to their poles. There were rings where fisticuffs were the cause of bloody noses and blackened eyes, these small arenas trading places periodically with armored opponents wielding blunted swords, cushioned axes, and staves. On the smoother ground the more elegant fencers donned their armor and took their stances, and there wasn’t a field left unmarred from the mock battles.

The healers were busy, circling the Fights and trying to keep enough magic in reserve for the most serious injuries. Potions, bandages, splints, and sometimes just a hearty dose of ginger and ale in the shade served the rest. For the lucky and skilled however, the prizes were well worth the bruises and blood.

There had been the usual arguing and posturing with Loki when Thor declared his intent to fight in some contests at the Faire. But eventually Loki had yielded. Which was why Thor was now wearing nothing but a pair of leather pants. He had a large, happy grin on his face as he rolled his shoulders out, eager for the matches.

As his opponent entered the stage Thor sized him up. "Good luck to you," he grinned. He waited for the match to begin, throwing a cocky grin at his brother before he turned his attention to his opponent. As the match began Thor moved in and easily began grappling with him, putting on a bit of a show before the Asgardian Prince tossed the man from the stage, laughing.

"Who wishes to face me next?" he called out, laughing.

Teddy was doing surprisingly well--no small thanks to his strength and flexibility that wove in his muscles and bone so strongly from the highland orcs and the shapeshifters blood in his veins. He had just finished managing to trip up a minotaur during the last match and was now among those allowed to place a challenge to the higher stages.

He took a deep breath, calming his nerves and looking to see if anyone else was taking the challenge. There was a dark-haired man that was looking up at the golden haired warrior with a playful tutting. Teddy thought he looked familiar, but didn't place him immediately with Loki being in glamour that hid his blue skin and horns. The thinner man was certainly not taking the challenge, though, so Teddy pulled in a deeper breath, stepping up and climbing onto the stage.

For Mia's bow... he thought to himself, falling into a crouch as the rules keeper held his hands out. But there was more to it than that and he felt the smile creep above his small tusks.

He liked this, the ability to stretch and test himself. He had to be careful to hold his form, lest he give his nature away, but it was another element of challenge that made it all the better somehow. How far could he go?

The rules keeper dropped his hands, quickly moving out of the way and the half-orc cautiously advanced.

Thor was in good spirits. He knew the Allfather would disapprove of the Prince of Asgard fighting in these matches (what if he were to lose, how would that be reflected upon Asgard and her people) but these games, this Faire was to build good relations. Besides, no one could best Thor when his full wrath was unleashed. This was all for sport and fun.

When his next opponent entered the ring, Thor sized him up. He seemed...young but strong and the blonde warrior mage was reminded of himself. He broke out into a wide grin and shifted his feet ever so slightly. "You're big," he commented. "Let's see how much of a challenge you are. A good one I hope," he grinned, his blue eyes alight with joy and mirth.

When the rulse keeper moved out of the way Thor didn't bother being cautious (probably to his brother's chagrin). He charged in with a loud, exhuberant bellow and gripped the young man's shoulders and began forcing him towards the edge of the ring.

"I hope so as well," Teddy noted with a grin, glad this fellow took this as a fun sport (much better than some of the contestants, who were either too serious or very poor sport). The light-haired half-orc narrowed his eyes in concentration as Thor charged in, then braced his foot book. He let Thor's push wind his spine some, then he forced his shoulder and shoved with his legs, forearm knocking outward to loosen Thor's grip. Outright hits weren't aloud, but such sweeps were permissible.

"Holy Sunlord, you're strong," he managed out from his teeth as he tried to keep his grounding so Thor couldn't topple him. In a straight shove, though, the two were very closely matched. In fact, Teddy digging in with his bare toes more was starting to push Thor backward.

The move the younger man did to push back was a bit of a surprise but Thor grinned and chuckled a bit at the comment. "I am Asgardian and a Thunder Mage," he returned, his face focusing with effort to shove back as he felt himself sliding.

"You are strong yourself young one," he grunted back. In a surprising move for him, Thor shifted his weight and stepped to the side so that the forward momentum Teddy was pushing with would send him forward. Possibly out of the ring but time would tell.

"Oh! That explains so much," he managed, straining to get further away from the edge at his back.

It worked rather well. A more experienced fighter probably would have used the momentum and swung around Thor toward his back. Teddy was not nearly so talented. His balance missed and sent him forward. If he had tried to keep his feet, he would have gone over the edge.

Instead, he kept in mind what he'd heard a dwarf saying. "Don't go over. Go down." Sage advice, even if he forced his feet to stop and Whumped! into the stage. A regular person would have groaned at the hard belly flop. It didn't hurt Teddy a bit.

Besides, it put his feet very close to Thor's, and grappling with one's feet was allowed. His ankle hooked over the Asgardian's, gave a fierce, short pull, then he was spinning back to try to get a grip on him and either shove or push him off.

Thor grinned when the boy managed to stay in the ring but the smile fell when he felt himself to start to fall. Like Teddy though, he made himself fall short of the ring's edge, but it was close to nearly falling off.

He rolled back to the center of the ring and got up, a grin on his face. "What's your name lad?" he asked.

He was quick, too. He slipped quickly from Teddy and the younger fighter paused, knowing somehow better than to launch at him in hopes of catching him off guard and sending him off the edge. Thor had a lot more experience than him, could read what he was about to do much better.

"Theodore, but no one calls me that," he noted as he got to his feet. "They call me Ted or Teddy instead." Not Dorrek. Not his princely name. But it was not truly a lie either. He'd grown up with the other name, so it was truth enough. It was an interesting scenario, these two princes trying to knock each other off the edge and having no idea the other was royalty.

"Yours?" he asked when he came in close again, trying to keep his center of gravity low and again trying to bull the taller man over the edge, this time keeping a foot forward in case Thor tried to sweep aside again.

The boy was good. Other fighters would have launched themselves at Thor to try and knock him off. This boy, Teddy, was solid enough that it might actually send him staggering but Thor would ensure that both would fall were that the case.

"Well met Teddy," he grinned, locking up with him and pushing back. "I am Thor Odinson." He knew Odin was a well known name. The Allfather of the cold, brutal lands across the sea. The king who had sent the Frost Giants fleeing. "And you are presenting quite the challenge young one," he grunted with approval. He tried shifting his weight to throw him off.

"I would wager you are a warrior through and through."

"Thor Od-." Teddy's eyes widened, then quickly recaught his balance. "Well met," he said, though it was obvious he was more than a little intimidated now.

Teddy tottered, having to shift his feet from getting thrown. "Actually, this is my first contest. I've never soldiered," he admitted, then promptly had to go to a knee to keep balance. "I've just learned to be flexible." Just like that his shoulder rolled unnaturally in Thor's grip and he regained the upper hand, grip clamping over his like iron and retaking ground again.

Thor's shrewd brother narrowed his eyes where he was standing at the edge of the stage with the other spectators. Now Teddy recognized him--one of their best information buyers. He especially recognized Loki's voice as he called out, "Thor's weak on his left knee, kid. Knock him from his high horse."

Teddy blinked. Why was Odin's ward Loki giving him tips on how to--? He started to step the other way, and suddenly felt the air rushing and the ground hit his back. He blinked up at the sky and then suddenly at a pale face above him with green eyes that were as pleased as a fox in a hen house.

"I may have been mistaken," Loki said. "Maybe it's his right side."

The blonde thunder mage grinned. "You have the air of one who protects others," he returned. He narrowed his eyes in focus as Teddy shifted his shoulder and began pushing him towards the edge.

When he heard Loki call out advice for Teddy to take, Thor frowned in disapproval. Not because it was accurate but because it was inaccurate. Without a word he shifted and sent Teddy sprawling. He straightened and dropped down, giving his brother a disapproving stare.

"That was uncalled for Loki," he growled, a sulk on his face. "I was enjoying grappling with the young one." He turned to Teddy and held his hand out. "Never listen to my brother when I am in a contest." He gave Teddy a kind smile. "We shall have to grappel again."

"Guess I probably should have known that..." Teddy muttered abashedly. Prince Loki had a reputation. He sat up, rubbing the back of his head to scatter the dirt from it while watching the two brothers. Loki was currently making a show of studying his nails to avoid Thor's disapproving gaze, then he was smiling all too wide and shrugging, a body gesture that clearly said 'it was just a bit of fun'. Fun that had come at Teddy's expense, though.

Teddy stood up. "It's fine. I don't think I could have won against you anyway, m'lord." He gave a respectful bow. "And while it seems unseemly to accept, I would like a rematch in the future. Hopefully when I have more experience."

Loki looked bored seeming toward Teddy. "Oh, I don't think thou art out of place requesting a match. It is not as though the two of thee are, how to say," Loki lift his palm. "of uneven standing?" His green eyes narrowed, the edge of his finger covering his lips as he considered Teddy in a way that made him feel like he was being looked through. "Though perhaps it is best thou does not call attention to thyself."

Loki reached into his black and green tunic and Teddy tensed, but to his surprise a small purse of coins was tossed to him. "Now do stay low."

"Uh. Yes, m'lord," Teddy said, blinking.

But Loki was no longer even looking at him, instead pointing at Thor. "Not a word! Thou had best earn that back for me by winning." No secret to Thor that Loki liked to place bets on the contest outcomes. He never bet in favor of Thor losing.

Thor clapped a hand on Teddy's back. "Call me Thor young Teddy. And I look forward to a rematch! You will be quite the warrior with the right training." He watched the interaction between Teddy and Loki with some confusion before he narrowed his eyes some.

"I should withdraw from the matches to prove a point to thee," he growled. "To not interfere in a fair contest of strength. Your little stunt was dishonourable to me brother as if you doubted my skills." His eyes narrowed a bit dangerously. "Win your money back yourself. You'll not do it off of me. I think I shall in fact withdraw now." Especially since Teddy now safely had the money.

Teddy smiled thankfully at the clap to his back. At Thor's other announcement, Loki twitched openly, a look of alarm crossing his features before turning to Thor, hands on the edge of the stage then flailing as he tried frantically to change Thor's mind. "Thou wouldn't! It-it was a small thing of testing a warrior's skill to see if they could assess a person's weaknesses and strengths themselves! Th-there's no dishonor in such a thing! And it is as he said! He wouldn't have won! Truly! Thou couldst have injured the young man! I was saving thee possible guilt!"

Hulkling was blinking, the half-orc still holding the small bag of coins in his big hands. He tilt his head, trying to keep up with the rapid spill of words as Loki plead with Thor. "Is... is that how you can afford to pay us for so much? I thought it was just treasuries or something similar."

Loki looked annoyed toward Teddy. "Partly! And that's not a matter to be discussed in the open! Must thou be so obvious in everything?"

"... Sorry, m'lord. Didn't realize I was."

Loki's brow twitched. "Well, thou might have been." He clasped his hands together. "Thor, come now. Thou likes these contests!"

Thor kept his eyes narrowed. "You spoke of a false weakness to him that cost him the match. And skills alone do not determine a win. Luck is also a factor in fights."

His fists clenched. "Thou thinks so low of me that I would cause injury to him?" He shook his head. He turned his attention to one of the rule keepers. "Thor Odinson withdraws from the remaining wrestling matches." He turned and gave a hard look at Loki.

"Keep thy silver tongue silent in my other matches or I'll instruct everyone to pay the coin they owe you to charities." He turned and stormed away.

"Sometimes it's bad luck, is all." But Loki sounded meek and not at all firm in conviction, his fingers tangling together and not meeting Thor's eye.

"No, not on purpose. I meant that perhapshed'sinjuredhimself and--Thooooooor."

Loki stammered some, leaning away from Thor. His brother was in a tempestuous mood now, and there were limits to what he could push for and some moods were more reasonable than others. So at the moment, all he could do was whine and try to figure up his losses in his head. Once he reached the number he felt torn between having a stamping fit or crying, so instead just stared after Thor's back gloomily.

Teddy in the meantime quietly snuck the coin purse into his pocket and put his hands behind his back. When Loki just continued to mope, he started to step away toward the crowd.

"You!" Loki pointed at him. Teddy froze, smiling nervously. "I've a job for thee. Come on."

"A job?" Teddy asked, dismayed as he was ushered away by the moping Prince, swept into a swift walk with him.

"Yes, I haven't had any luck finding out who is being searched for, but I think I can find out if someone tails one of the searchers. Not that I can afford to pay thee much now, but thou would do it gladly to save a life seeing as thou has 'the air of one who protects others.'"

Teddy gave Loki a deadpan look. "Charity work really isn't in our policy."

"Nor is blackmail in mine," Loki retorted.

The lie was so blatant that Teddy just sighed. He had no doubt now that Loki knew exactly who he was. "Okay, I need a description."

The wrestling had been fun but nothing, nothing, got Thor's blood pumping like a good brawl. And the fisticuffs part of these fights appealed the most to him. He rubbed his taped up hands together eagerly and bounced excitedly on the balls of his feet like a child at Yule.

He paced around the ring, waiting for his opponent to enter.

Sword Fighting - OPEN

Conner had enjoyed the Faire so far but what he was really looking forward to were the fights. Specifically the sword fighting. It was a way to test his skills and to see how he needed to improve. Unlike some of the fighters he opted for no chest/torso protector. He was tough and could take the hits that would make it past his guard. It was a way to remember where he needed to improve.

He paced the small ring and waited for his opponent. He was eager but did his best to show restraint.

Effie examined her sword as her maid put the finishing touches in making sure Effie's hair stayed unmangled, rolling her eyes behind her guard's back as he paced, lecturing her on proper technique.

Effie stood as they called for her, brushing aside both maid and guard, stepping out into the arena. She paused, looking over her opponent. "You know, they do sell shirts here, very nice ones."

The barbarian turned his attention to the woman and studied her. Just because she was a woman meant nothing. He had met quite a few warrior women and the like on his travels. He smirked a bit at her words and shrugged, easily flipping the sword up onto his shoulders to hold.

"My armor would keep me from feeling where my guard is weakest," he returned easily. "And a nice shirt would only get ruined."

Effie, after a night of secrets and engagements and plotting to run away from her parents was feeling free and adventurous, and so, she unbuckled her chest plate, casting it aside, along with the under tunic she wore, feeling literally more free now that two layers were gone, leaving her in just the loose muslin wrap she wore under both.

"If you two are finished, you may begin," the rules keeper said, trying not to roll his eyes. Effie's grip on her sword shifted, but she hesitated in making an opening move against a man who could easily out power her with a finger.

It was a painful lesson to learn that blunt swords could still cut. Perhaps not as deeply as they would were they sharpened but shallow cuts, Conner had found, hurt far worse than deep ones.

As the girl's attacks grew more fierce, Conner immediately noted something strange. She was changing here and there. Her eyes and skin mainly. Magic to hide her true appearance which meant she had magic of some kind. He focused on the fight though, refusing to grunt or cry out with the few hits that landed past his guard. Pain let one know they were still living after all.

She slid under one of his swings, the scent of blood (both his and hers) fueling her. She lashed out again, eager, near desperate to draw more of that blood, to bath in the scent of it. Normally she buried that side of her, the inhuman, the fae...the Unseelie. But today, it slipped out, fighting past her control, eager to be let lose, to truly exist.

She spun, her sword flashing up, and as she did, her teeth grew, sharpening, more of her glamour slipping away.

Kurt dispatched his opponent and grinned, turning to the audience and giving a bow. "And that's how it's done," he bragged, playing up the part of the loveable rogue that worked so well for him. Besides... the ladies loved it and he knew there were no shortage of buxom barmaids who'd want to keep his bed warm for the night. Not to mention it meant he'd likely not have to pay for a room.

He swished his sword as he paced along the area, still grinning widely to the crowd as he waited for another opponent. He'd left the sword fighting to the brutes and the ones with more brawn than brains. The fencing though? Kurt was in his element. Quick, agile, and as sharp of tongue as his rapier's edge. The purse for this event would be his, one way or another.
