Batgirl didn't find herself in the suburbs that often. For one thing, it was outside of her usual patrol route. For another, the more stoppable crimes that happened in this part of the city involved domestic disputes or people throwing loud parties laced with underage drug dealing. And there were plenty of those in inner city apartments on her route. In fact, she was sure that those crimes and more were happening at the moment while she was out here amongst the rows of houses and trees and fences and barking dogs.
But orders were orders. Barbara was in her Big Giant Head mode, and she'd uploaded a virtual map with waypoint markers to the system in Batgirl's cowl. The display was projected onto the insides of her eyepieces, and Batgirl consulted it every so often to make sure she was int he right place. While she couldn't read addresses, she understood landmarks and icons like no one's business, so she was good to go.
A dog was barking next door, so she unwrapped an energy bar from her belt, tore off a chunk of it, and tossed it next to the dog, hoping it would take the bait and stop barking. It worked, at least for a little bit. This gave her the opportunity to approach the house that was the map's waypoint.
One of the lights was on, and she peered into it. She didn't bother being stealthy about it, since the teenage boy inside was busy texting on his phone and wasn't fully facing the window. Her mission was to match the boy's face with the image of him that had been included with the virtual map. It was a side view of his face, and it looked very much like boy sitting in the room. She pressed a button on the side of her mask lens, and it started doing that thing where a person's face was scanned and compared to the image. He just had to stay still for a few more seconds.
Then he moved, interrupting the scan. Moved toward the window, in fact. He looked in her direction, and just like that, she was on the roof. She was fairly sure he'd had at least a momentary glance at her, since her masked face had been almost pressed against the window. She opened a comm link. "Oracle," she whispered. "Him. It's ... him."
