Who: Jesse Chambers, Vision (Victor Shade)
Where: Quickstart Enterprises, New York
When: July 9, 2014
What: Vision's been job hunting, but really, it's not easy for someone without a solid background. Jesse Chambers, thankfully, is giving him a chance.
Rating: PG
Most applicants were nervous. Most had signs of sweat, jittery motions, quick eye glances. Many sprayed on too much scent additives, or looked uncomfortable in their dressy clothes. Sometimes they managed to stay calm and collected until it was time to test their basic skills. He had passed all the tests, not only swiftly -- but perfectly. The human resources’ department had been rather astonished that he had no college degrees, and there were some other troubles as well, such as having a GED rather than a highschool diploma, and a job history that didn’t have details due to its confidential nature. Maybe that was why he grabbed human resources interests so quickly. He was just different and the human resources department wasn’t sure if Victor Shade could be very good or very bad for Quickstart Enterprises. Especially when so little came up in the background check.
So the file was forwarded on to the CEO herself to make the call, and he was invited in for a second interview, as calm and composed as he had been for the first with the human resources two floors below.
“Ms. Chambers. It’s good to meet you,” he greeted, shaking her hand and offering a smile. His palm was cool and dry. Then he took the seat that was obvious in front of her desk and waited for her to guide the interview as she wished.

Normally, when someone didn’t meet the qualifications of the job, unless they had something extra, human resources normally weeded them out. But this was a special case it seemed. Genious with little formal education, and a past that flashed the word classified whenever he was looked into. So that at least led to something potentially very interesting.
So when her assistant let her know the man was there , Jesse told her to let him in. “You as well, Mr. Shade.” She said, motioning for him to sit before she too sat down behind his desk.
It took her a second before starting. “Here’s the deal.” She started plainly. “You’ve impressed Dr. Samsburg with your interview and practical skills, and he’d be your direct supervisor.” And normally she allowed department heads to hire and fire as they saw fit. “But this was kicked up to me given your rather unique background.” She looked him over for a moment. “There’s been little we’ve been able to confirm about you and your work history.”
~~~
He gave a nod of understanding as she spoke, glad she was being frank about the matter. “I understood that would be a concern. I am glad I have been courteous allowing the benefit of the doubt thus far. I hope you will continue to extend the courtesy.”
There was no nervousness exhibited as he leaned back in his chair slightly, gaze steady as he started to explain. “I used to work for an organization known as Checkmate. Many that used to work for it are either dead or scattered, the organization long disbanded. I was forced out of action some time ago, and had a long and complicated recovery process. Recently, though, the cause for my lack of work history is much more mundane. I’ve simply been a stay at home father.” His resume had said such, though not any details or mention concerning Checkmate. He was verbally confiding.
~~~
“I’m well aware of Checkmate.” She wouldn’t say how, but she knew of them, and knew it was defunct so getting any confirmation on this bit of work history wasn’t going to happen, but his list of personal references though was kind of off the charts amazing, so she was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
She nodded along with the rest of what he was saying. “As good a reason as any to stay home for a while.” She put his sparse resume down and folded her hands on her desk.
“So we’re a biomedical research company, but really technology in this field has taken off in a way that I don’t think many people would have predicted fifty years ago. What we’re working on is the design of hightech prosthetics, surgical robotics, and the software and computer side of this has to be complex enough to work under a myriad of circumstances, but user friendly enough to be used by the people who need to use it.”
~~~~~
He gave a nod to her noting her awareness of the institution. That at least removed the need to elaborate further, which he had suspected would be awkward.
Vision could have said he had a great deal of understanding on prosthetics. He was an entirely prosthetic human being, in his thinking. He did not, however. There were enough questions concerning him as it was. “That is the prominent reason as to why I find your company attractive, Ms. Chambers. It’s entirely civilian advancement rather than military. The product line is also highly impressive despite the obvious challenges in its development. Everything has to be developed uniquely as you do not rely on any other major software companies.” He had his mouth open very briefly as though to go on, but it closed easily. He had done his research, but he didn’t wish to be presumptuous with what it had alluded to.
~~~
Her mouth quirked up a bit. “We’ve been getting by, we have some on staff that can handle a great deal, but outsourcing and independent contractors can be a great deal of red tape.” She explained. They were finally ready to expand this aspect of their business. “And to be quite frank I”m tired of “getting by.” And we’re finally in a position to do something about it.”
She studied him from a long moment. “Anything else I should know?”
~~~
He still barely moved, blinking and breathing uniform throughout. “Which I am glad of.” Growth meant, of course, that they were hiring. It also meant challenge. “I have become restless with newfound idle time.”
Vision gazed back, patiently allowing her to assess. At the question he glanced down briefly. “Not at this time, I don’t believe. Only that if given the opportunity, I would do my utmost to not disappoint.”
~~~
She hit a couple buttons on her keyboard, pulling up her schedule. She looked at it carefully for a long moment. “I’m available Friday at two PM. That’ll give HR time to put paperwork together. I can get you a tour and get you set up to start on Monday.”
She realized that this was a risk. “The employment contract states that there is a 90 day probationary period, and will also state that all tech developed is proprietary to this company.” Basically just making sure people knew they couldn’t sell their developments elsewhere when designed on their dime.

He felt a surge of energy through his chest, circuitry releasing tensed power as he awaited verdict. People took Vision for being extremely stoic, but truthfully he just had so much control on his body he didn’t react outwardly to many things. So it definitely said a great deal when he inhaled more to cool his chest, lifted his chin and offered a sincere smile. “Thank you.”
Vision understood this was a risk on her part. He was an unknown variable. Victor Shade could very well be a competing company’s espionage unit or other unsavory sort. Tech companies had to be vigilant of such security breaches to protect their interests. However, the only valid argument to offer in retaliation was his background was so utterly full of holes, an actual individual in corporate espionage would have made sure their background was more flush with less red flags. His was almost simply too honest.
Of course, Vision was an honest individual. The deceit simply on the name and identity were enough to curdle his moral senses. He would have to make up for that with being a worthwhile employee.
Perhaps in time, he could afford more honesty. As it was he had managed to lie as little as possible. “That is more than agreeable. I understand there will be contractual agreements to sign and abide by.”
~~~
She nodded and stood up. “In that case. It was good to meet you Mr. Shade.” She said holding out her hand. “And I will see you on Friday.”
~~~
He stood as well, shaking her hand with more enthusiasm than before. His palms were still sweat-free. “It has been a pleasure, Ms. Chambers. I will be here.”
Vision could have waited until he was to the car, but he was eager to share the news, pulling his phone out of the suit jacket and dialing Wanda’s number. He had good news to share.
