Who: Maria and Matt
When: 2/19, after these texts
Where: Matt’s Brownstone, Hell’s Kitchen
What: Maria needs to talk to someone, and Matt’s conveniently a lawyer and so has to do confidentially well, right?
Rating: High for swearing
Lack of sleep made you both jittery, trying to hyperfocus, and sloppy; the combination meant that Maria knew she was off her game, knew she was taking chances and making mistakes, but she didn’t very well have a choice in the matter. Time was not her friend right now; she wasn’t sure who or what was, but that wasn’t the point.
Point was, there were aliens, and she couldn’t tell who was an alien and who was safe. She could narrow it down a little, by determining percentages and likelihoods, thinking about who she’d convert if she was trying to take over a planet. But any test they’d developed had proven pretty well worthless, so it was all down to behaviors, suspicions, and waiting for the suckers to reveal themselves.
They were winning. Stopping in front of the tidy Hell’s Kitchen brownstone, Maria frowned up at the three floors and knew that she should have entered through the roof, or the fire escape, or something other than the front door, on a wide open street. She just couldn’t bring herself to care right now: the aliens were, effectively, winning. Right now, the best thing that could happen was for the Skrulls to ambush her: at least she’d have something to fight.
Instead, she just kept trying to close her hands around smoke, and knew that there was a fire burning somewhere that was eating away at everything around her, and couldn’t even see the glow, much less fight it at the source.
She wasn’t sure what good a Hell’s Kitchen criminal defense lawyer could do, but she still found herself climbing the steps and knocking. It would be nice to be able to tell someone something other than ‘classified’.
