Bobby's Birthday Bash - Because Alliteration is Awesome
Who: Bobby Drake and OT Xavier Institute peoples.
Where: Xavier Institute Cafeteria
What: Bobby has a birthday party. Either fortunately or unfortunately, his best friend Kitty is in charge of it.
When: Backdated to Monday, April 2nd
Rating: G

Bobby Drake was now twenty-four. He didn't feel much different than he had the day before, or the day before that. As far as he was aware, there were no milestones to celebrate, other than the simple achievement of having survived April Fool's Day at the school the day before.

As he approached the cafeteria, he couldn't help feeling a mounting sense of unease. He wasn't sure why; he looked forward to birthdays. It meant there were parties. Of course, Kitty Pryde had put herself in charge of organizing his birthday parties, but that hadn't turned out that badly for him, right? There was just that one really embarrassing one that had spiraled into a comedy of errors. And the one before that that had descended into crazy awesome. And the one before that...

But how bad could it be this year?

He entered the cafeteria and stopped in his tracks, staring slackjawed at the sight that greeted him.

Sometimes Kitty thought that her calling in life was party planning... until she actually got into the process of planning the party and when things didn't go exactly how she wanted it to, she was not the happiest person to deal with. That being said, for the last couple of weeks of March, every year since she was 14, Kitty became the least reasonable person in the world. Why? Because her best friend, Bobby, had a birthday at the beginning of April. And as a best friend, it was her duty to plan his birthday and make it as spectacular (or embarrassing) as possible.

Kitty had out done herself this year, unintentionally. The room was... different. When Kitty started planning the party, it was going to be simple so there wouldn't be a repeat of that one disastrous year. But as everything was falling together, things kept sprouting in her mind and before she knew it, it had a mind of its own. She had been aiming for a mature birthday, something that would reflect the man that Bobby had become. Or at least had the ability to act like when it was called for. A simple cake and sign had turned into cupcakes, cookies and a sign. The cupcakes, cookies, decorative straws in drinks and a sign. Before long, Kitty's room was filling up with decorations that she was somehow going to set up all over the cafeteria in between classes on Bobby's birthday. The invitations had been sent out a week before to everyone Kitty could get off of Bobby's cellphone and all the staff/students, so everyone was ready for the makeover the cafeteria would be getting.

The first thing that would have been noticed would have been that around the room was an assortment of moustaches and ties. A large sign hung over the photo area, and a photographer was at the ready, all set up against the back wall. On the table just beside the door was a collection of moustaches, manacles, hats and an assortment of other items for the guests/students/staff/whoever decided to drop by. To the left was the food table, covered with finger foods, desserts and drinks for both underage and of age guests (who takes what will be closely monitored). To the right, a table of grab bags, because who doesn't love grab bags, that had crayons, soap and an assortment of other moustache related paraphernalia. Kitty was pretty proud of herself. This party was definitely a mature but fun theme for anyone’s birthday, so Bobby should be happy.

When the door opened, Kitty turned and grinned, seeing Bobby in the door way. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” she yelled, chorused by the guests that had already arrived. Bounding across the room, she lunged at him and hugged him tightly, kissing his cheek.

Scott Summers was one of the people who was in on Kitty's latest madcap birthday scheme. He played the big brother figure to both Bobby and Kitty, and he was always impressed by what Kitty could accomplish when she put her mind to it. More often than not, he was amused by the results in equal measure.

This birthday was no exception. Circled on his calendar in his often was not only Bobby's birthday, but the two weeks before that. He'd titled the circled period, "KATE'S BIRTHDAY RAMPAGE", and when the time neared for the rampage to start, he'd made it known to her years ago that he was more than happy to play silent accomplice to whatever she might have planned. Anything she needed, he'd find a way to get done under the table.

His contributions usually amounted to (wisely) staying out of her way.

She outdid herself this year. It was all he could do to keep from laughing until his sides hurt at the mere sight of the Moustache Party. Luckily, he had the self-control to just carry on at the party and greet guests with his normal calm expression, as if nothing were out of the ordinary ... while wearing a fake handlebar moustache. He guessed his calm expression would just serve to make the situation even funnier than it already was.

He shouted, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" along with everyone else, then he greeted Bobby with a pat on the shoulder as Kitty attached herself to him.

Bobby was still utterly speechless.

Mondays were boring days and most of the time, Bea wasn't good with remembering birthdays but Bobby's was hard to forget as it was always the day after April Fool's. It wasn't that hart choosing a boring day at the office, or taking a day off to celebrate his birthday at the mansion.

She hadn't been in on the planning -- and anyone who knew her knew that that wasn't her thing at all, but she had to admit that Kitty had turned the cafeteria into something that she would have never imagined. It looked nothing like the room she had spent so much of her teen years in.

By the time, Bobby entered the cafeteria, Bea had stationed herself by the drinks, fending off the underage students from the alcohol and taking tentative sips of beer as she did. Seeing her friend, Bea excused herself from the group of boys around her and walked over to the birthday boy. She gave him a one-armed hug and planted a chaste kiss on the lips, "Happy Birthday! Now the party can really start."

Despite her un-involvement with the mutant population as a whole and specifically Xavier's, Dinah was still 1)a outed mutant and supporter of mutant rights and 2) Bobby's cousin-- so she had managed to wrangle an invitation. Besides-- if she didn't show up tonight he probably wouldn't wish her a happy birthday herself in a couple weeks (though she could probably live without that).

As Bobby came in and a line of girls formed to give him kisses, Dinah couldn't help but grin-- and he gave her the look at the Betty White thing!

As the line diminished she got in it to give him another lipstick print on the cheek (he was going to look like Hugh Heffner soon) and an unwrapped cactus.

"Happy birthday, baby cousin." She teased as she handed over the cactus. "I figured a plant was more masculine than flowers-- and a cactus is pretty resilient. Try not to kill it intentionally."

All these women lining up to give the Birthday Boy kisses? Remy smiled inwardly as he walked in, mentally arranging a weekly birthday party for himself. The guest list was pretty obvious.

Entering fully into the spirit of things, Gambit was wearing a glorious handlebar moustache complete with top hat and monocle. There was even a cane to complete the look. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" He called out with the others, raising his glass in Bobby's direction.

Rogue was among the others who were wishing Bobby a happy birthday when he came into the room. She was having a bit of fun with the theme, though finding it a little ridiculous. Still, it was light hearted and fun, and that seemed to fit Bobby perfectly.

She was the only girl who wasn't going to go kissing Bobby. Nothing quite ruined a birthday than putting some poor guy into a coma, especially when it was the birthday boy. However, she did go up and give him a hug, seeing that they were in fact friends and friends hugged on occasions like these. She had a fake mustache in one hand and a cup of some spirit with a straw in disguise a la mustache.

"Happy birthday, Bobby," she said with a smile, "Welcome to the twenty-four club." Which so far consisted of just herself.

When Rogue approached, Bobby wondered if she would keep the theme going and give him a kiss too. Sure, there was that mutant sponge power, but c'mon, one little peck?

Guess not.

Still, any hug from Rogue was one he enjoyed; he gratefully hugged her back. Seeing that she was holding her fake mustache, he urged her to, "put it on! Put it on! I want to see what you look like with it!" He found himself wondering: if she could actually grow an actual mustache, would it have a white stripe like the hair on her head did?

Well. That was a weird thought.

"Thanks. So this is what it's like to be twenty-four. It's certainly a lot hairier than I thought it'd be."

Rogue brought the fake mustache to her face, placing it where a mustache would be if she had the capability of growing one and even raised an eyebrow, "That better?" She grinned and shook her head with a little eye roll. Twenty-four, yes, but still a little boy on the inside. That's what made him Bobby though.

"It's not much different than being twenty-three, except you're a year closer to being able to rent a car, but that depends on the company," she shrugged, "Not that you need it or anythang." She laughed though and felt bad she couldn't tell him how awesome that age was.

The last exciting birthday was at twenty one really, after that it was just one year after another until you were over the hill. "Have you opened any presents today?"

If the sight of Scott Summers wearing a fake mustache had officially been the strangest thing he'd seen at the party so far, Remy with a mustache, top hat, monocle, and cane was definitely a close second. It would have made first place if Scott wearing a handlebar mustache hadn't seemed so hilariously uncharacteristic, whereas Remy pulled off the look as if he dressed like this every day.

Wandering over to Remy at one point, he couldn't help adjusting his mustache as he inspected Remy's attire. "Mr. Peanut, I presume?" He hoped Remy would take it in the joking manner he'd intended.

Bobby was having a grand old time with some of the younger mustache-bearing children when his cousin walked up. "Di! Thanks for coming!" Standing up, he grinned and accepted the kiss on the cheek. He was about to hug her when he realized what she was holding and backed up a step. It was a cactus.

He accepted the gift with a chuckle. "Geez, this is what I get for having a florist as a cousin. Forget to water one plant, and I never live it down." Still, he had to admit it was the most unique present he'd received by far. And somehow amid the insanity of glorious handlebar mustaches and girls actually kissing him on purpose, this gift seemed somehow logical.

Why couldn't April Fool's Day ever be this awesome?

Regarding the cactus for a long moment, he announced, "I think I'll name it ... Sherman."

"An aunt and a cousin." She said, grinning and handing the cactus over.

"Sherman, huh? That's a good name. But something's missing..." Dinah paused for a moment, cocking her head to one side to give Bobby and the cactus mock consideration before she took one of the spare mustaches and carefully affixed it to the cactus.

She adjusted her monocle as she looked at Bobby and Sherman again, then pressed her fingertips together and kissed them in an faux-Italian "spicy meat-a-ball" kind of way. "Perfect-o! Now Sherman's dressed for the party too.

"Ah yes. Aunt Dinah as well."

He watched as Di carefully placed a spare mustache on the cactus -- quite a feat to avoid getting pricked by the needles. He laughed at the result. "Man, Sherman rocks the mustache!"

To Dinah, he added. "So, how've you been?"

Buffering...

Buffering...

Usually he was faster on the uptake than this, but somehow, right this moment, Bobby couldn't quite process the scenario that was laid out in front of him. He wasn't sure what he'd expected, but it certainly wasn't this. A comedy-of-errors birthday party, sure. A disastrous birthday party, sure. A crazy awesome birthday party? Sure, eventually, and maybe when he looked back on it. But one that started out as crazy awesome right out of the gate? Bobby was utterly blindsided. Especially by the sight of Scott Summers of all people rocking a fake mustache.

He stood there a bit numbly as Kitty kissed him on the cheek and Scott patted him on the shoulder, but it took a certain green-haired beauty planting one on his lips to get him to snap out of it. Sure, it was a platonic kiss, but it was still progress for Bobby.

A gigantic grin lit up his face. "Best. Birthday. Ever!" He gathered up both Kitty and Bea in a hug before they could get away. Bea was right: now the party could really begin.

Birthday's were always a happy occasion at the school. Whoevers it was, the kids always seemed to be stupidly excited - and with so many children living there, they'd turned into a regular occurrence. Jean was trying to coral the students as best she could as Bobby entered and several of them ran towards him, all wearing the silly fake moustaches. Jean laughed shouting Happy Birthday with the rest of the room, twiddling her nose a little, the bright red fake hair under her nose making her sneeze. She turned away laughing to herself as she tried to organise the food into sensible piles before it was set upon by the guests.

Although she wasn't quite with it, she felt happy seeing so many smiling faces. It was just tiredness she supposed, but she wasn't going to let it stop her having a good time.

Scott found himself running his fingers through his fake moustache; the action brought a glimpse of memory to the surface that made him pause in thought. His father'd had a moustache, hadn't he? It was one of the few things he could recall about his parents, thanks to the head injury when he was nine.

Snapping himself out of that train of thought, he watched as Bobby was mobbed by a crowd of students and a line of attractive woman wanting to kiss him. All of them, hilariously, were wearing the fake moustaches. Scott nodded to one of the other teachers, who'd come prepared with a camera.

He sidled up to Jean, whose cheerful spirits seemed to be mixed with something else. While he wasn't one for public displays of affection -- especially in a school and with another member of the faculty -- he gently brushed her arm with his and leaned in to speak in a low voice meant only for the two of them. "How're you holding up?"

He'd certainly noticed how much strain Jean had been under lately. Her powers had been spiking, and it was taking all of her self control to keep it in check. He supposed the crowd of excited minds in the room would be pushing against her mental barriers. "Say the word, and we could go someplace quiet. They'll understand."

"I'm fine." It wasn't a snappy answer, Jean was trying to sound as relaxed as possible, but her words were more abrupt than she would have liked them to sound.

The feel of Scott's arm on hers made her flinch a little - her arm jumping instinctively away from his. She hated it, but her body seemed to have developed a mind of it's own in the last couple of months. The lack of control was getting to her. That coupled with the fact she was applying so much control to her own powers was exhausting her. Jean turned her head to face him, pushing the feelings of exasperation to the very back of her mind, smiling gently. But the smile soon turned into a grin as she saw the terrible Mexican style moustache stuck to his upper lip. Suddenly aware of how silly they both looked, she reached forward to tug his away slowly, a twinkle of mischief in her eyes. She chose to ignore his suggestion of going anywhere quiet - the thought of being alone with Scott for an extended period of time put her on edge straight away - it shouldn't but it did and there were certain things she'd always had problems controlling. Instead she laughed out loud, looking down at the sticky moustache in her fingers before looking back at him.

"Maybe you should think about growing one of these..." she spoke again, an eyebrow arching, "What do you think of mine? I think it makes me look distinguished..."

Between the abrupt answer and her flinch at his touch, Scott's mood soured. She'd been far from fine for a while now. She was increasingly exhausted and irritable from lack of control over her powers. The tension was wearing on them both.

The only thing stopping him from calling her on it was the fact that they were at a party. Later, he wanted to have words with her, but for now he was glad her mood brightened upon seeing him wearing the mustache. She was wearing a red one; the sight brought a smile to his face.

"Very distinguished," he agreed. "Perhaps you can be the one to wear the mustache in this relationship. Though I have to admit it's crossed my mind to grow one." Though the idea took on a strange new meaning now that he realized his father'd had one.

Jean smiled as warmly as she could manage. Although Scott was nothing but polite and seemed happy enough, she could feel the frustration floating off him in waves. They washed over her quickly and she took a deep breath. Not just frustration, a little anger. Jean didn't like to pry into his mind, most of the time she didn't need to - Scott was usually an open book to her -- but it was certainly tempting. Jean reached up with her spare hand, peeling the fake moustache from her own top lip, her eyes searching over his face carefully.

"I don't think I'd suit a real one, though you might." She flicked one of her eye brows, grinning a little more.

She was trying to seem playful, seem like she was a few months ago when things were happier between them. Before she'd started staying up all night, not sharing their bed, not even kissing him any more. She remembered the last time they'd slept together. Bodies entwined, Scott's face, her panic -- no. It was shame. The memories of the flames and her sudden aggression made her want the ground to open up and swallow her whole. Jean had always been passionate when it came to Scott but it had turned into something different...

It had scared her.

Jean tentatively placed the fake moustaches down on the table that sat next to them and raised a hand to touch his forearm lightly.

The tension around Jean's eyes made her look older than she was. It was difficult for him to see her like this.

He pulled off his own mustache as she did, and he tried his best to smile. But they both knew the playfulness was forced. Still, she was actually touching his forearm. An effort was being made. "Kitty outdid herself with this party, didn't she?"

Kitty melted back through the crowd as the birthday boy was rightfully swarmed, mostly by women. So far so good, she could give herself a pat on the back if Bobby's reaction to the room was any indication of how he felt about the theme this year. Everyone seemed to be getting a kick out of it, and it was nice to see some of the more serious individuals let loose and go with the flow. True, she should have been donning one of the fake moustaches, but no one had called her out on that yet and she was hoping no one would, thought the monocles were calling to her.

Venturing towards the refreshments, she noticed the pack of boys milling about, one in particular snagging one of the adult beverages set out. "Hey! Bottle of water, mister. Don't think I don't know what's in that glass." She scolded the teen, waggling her finger at him before replacing the cup with one of the mini water bottles and shooing the teenagers away. She knew this would be the hard part to having an all ages get together, but there were enough adults around to stop any underage drinking. Or at least keep it to a minimum. Figuring it would be a shame to put a good drink to waste, Kitty took a sip from the straw and smiled to herself. Yup, this was a good party.

Soon enough, Bobby sidled up to his best buddy and grinned. "So, where's your mustache?" Seemed like a shame that the girl who'd masterminded the theme for the party would end up being the only one not to wear one. Heck, his new cactus was even wearing one. Holding up a fake mustache, he added, "don't worry, I have one right here. It's even in your color." Okay, so it wasn't quite the same shade of brown as her hair, but it was close enough.

In his other hand, he held the small cactus. "Oh, and meet Sherman. Present from Cousin Di." Walking around a busy party with that thing was kind of dangerous, so he wanted to show it to her before he made a quick trip to his room to set it down.

Of course it would happen to be the birthday boy that would request the moustache wearing. Kitty was surprised that Bobby came up to her, since he was the guest of honor and it seemed like he was getting at least a little bit of attention from his crush. But, if this is where he was choosing to be, she wasn't going to complain.

Graciously taking the sticky 'stache, Kitty stuck it to her upper lip and wiggled it a bit to make sure it was comfortable enough. She wouldn't wear it long, but she'd keep it on to make Bobby happy. "Thanks. I was nearly heartbroken about being left out of this." If sarcasm could drown a person, that statement would have left Bobby gasping for air. She smiled, and sipped her drink.

"Oh..." Kitty looked down at the cactus and gave it a little wave with her free hand. "Hello Sherman. It's a pleasure to meet you. Glad you could make it." She nodded matter of fact. "Please don't stab any body. That would be rude. Just saying." She added before carefully patting the top of the cactus, phasing her fingers so that it wouldn't hurt as she did so.

"So. Did I do good, or did I do good?"

"That's better," Bobby replied once Kitty had donned the mustache. He recognized her sarcasm. Clearly, she preferred being a spectator to being a participant in this insanity.

Well, that just wouldn't do.

"Sherman promises not to stab anybody unless they walk into him first. I hope. You're the big brain: are there cactuses ... er, cacti ... that shoot quills? Maybe I should ask Di before she leaves."

He chuckled. "Yeah, you did awesome! I'd high-five you, but ... y'know. Hands full of Sherman."
