Who: Danny Rand and OPEN
NPCs: Steel Phoenix, Crane Daughters, Homeless men
Where: Hell's Kitchen, NYC
When: October 7th, 2013
What: Danny meets the Steel Phoenix, and it goes worse for him than it did for Luke. He's left broken in Hell's Kitchen
Rating: R. Blood. Gore.
Thus far Danny had fared no better this evening than he had any other since Luke had been attacked. It felt like he had covered the better part of the city at least twice, and still there was not even a shadow of the individual that attacked Luke, the so-called Steel Phoenix. It would have been enough that this Steel Phoenix was Crane Mother's champion to get on Danny's radar, but the assault on Luke? That sent him into overdrive, and left him wrought with the kind of anger he had not felt since going after Harold Meachum following his return to Earth from K'un-Lun. For though Danny tried to resolve conflicts peacefully when he could despite being a living weapon, there were times when he wanted nothing than to thoroughly wreck another individual. He started to rise from the ledge he was perched upon, when the vibration at his side made him reach for his phone.
"Jeryn? This isn't a good time." Chatter on the other end. Danny got just enough of what the man on the other end was saying to answer.
"..Devouring us from the inside out? Potential threat? Look, I can't handle this right now. That's what I have you for. I'll try to stop by there as soon as I can, but no promises, alright?"
He tried to hang up, but Jeryn kept talking, more insistently now. "...More serious than I realize? Isn't that always the case? Alright, alright... like I said, I'll be there if I can manage it. But right now I need to focus on finding the man who assaulted Luke. Yeah.. yeah.. alright, bye."
"Looking for us, Iron Fist?"
Danny cursed as he rose and turned sharply to see a pair of Crane Daughters behind him, flanking a man who could only be Steel Phoenix. Just as Luke had said, his attire was quite similar, outside of the colors. Black and purple, in place of the green and yellow that he wore. But even more noteworthy was the emblazoned Phoenix symbol upon his chest. As Danny stared across at him, he decided he wanted to punch his fist right through it.
"You. You hurt my friend. Nearly killed him. And for that, I am going to break you in half. Tournament be damned."
Steel Phoenix looked at Danny, raised his arm, and motioned him to come forward and do just that.
Danny was more than happy to oblige, but the Crane Daughters stepped in his way. One punched high, the other kicked low. Danny turned the fist with his forearm even as he jumped to avoid leg, lashing out with his own.
Arm and skull cracked in unison before he landed, finishing off the surviving Crane Daughter with a jaw cracking uppercut before stepping over their bodies.
"No more hiding, no more running. We finish thi-" Danny trailed off as purple energy that he recognized as chi rippled past him and into the Steel Phoenix, as he saw and realized his error. "The Daughters.. so all this time Orson and I have been killing them off..." The thought made him sick, but there was nothing to be done about it now.
Danny moved forward and swung a sword arm blow, but Steel Phoenix was already inside his guard, answering with a closed fist to his abdomen. Moving faster than he could.
The breath went out of him, and Danny only just managed to block a kick to his head with both of his forearms, but the force of it still knocked him backward, toward the edge of the roof.
In those few seconds where he regained his balance and some measure of air, Danny immediately realized two very important things, which were each equally disturbing. The first was that Steel Phoenix was faster than he was, and the second.. the second was that his opponent was using Kunlunquan, the martial-arts form exclusive to K'un-Lun, against him. Which meant he had to have been trained by the Thunderer, and there were only a few individuals alive who could make that claim...
"Davos?" It was the first name that came to him, and given his rivalry with the man, it made the most sense. But as Steel Phoenix came forward he shook his head slowly. Danny lowered himself into a defensive stance, but instead of launching into a further attack Steel Phoenix slowly reached up and removed his mask.
"...No.. no... Oh God, no, it.. it can't be..."
As the right fist of the Steel Phoenix wreathed itself in mystical purple flame, Danny stood riveted in abstract horror, and did not raise a hand to block as the fiery fist connected with his chest and send him flying backward over the edge of the roof with a flash of light that lit up the night sky.
