Loki appeared back on Midgard within a ball of fire. The flames whipped briefly in the air before they faded, leaving the smoke of brimstone and even less stench of fetid flesh around the doubled figure. Loki straightened slowly, grimacing and looking down to his smoking glove. The mark burned as it sunk and disappeared into his palm.
Shaking hands with devils stung... As well as had its other costs. The price was worth what he would gain in the end, though. His hand snapped closed, making a crunching sound on the burnt leather as he looked up, face calm and eyes burning. He was used to pain.
When you had an older brother like Thor and lived on a realm that honored warriors, it came naturally.
Speaking of Thor...
Loki pulled his cloak about himself in a swift whipping motion. He disappeared, and reappeared on the streets of New York in front of a hotel. Well, not his usual self. It was a statuesque woman in a green overcoat with patterns pressed into its leather that stalked into the fancy hotel and directly to the elevator. The doorman looked at her. "Boss summoned you a long time ago, lady."
Loki only gave him a sharp look. Yes, he knew the boss of the Fifth Family wanted to see him (her). He had informed them long ago he worked on his own schedule. "Just get me to the right floor... and keep your eyes off my breasts, little man." It wasn't that Loki minded being looked at, whatever his form. Oh, he never stopped thinking of himself as a man, no matter what he changed into. And it was true that ladies could often slip places, get away with more, and have a great deal more fun in general. It was just this particular peasant of a doorman had always had a tone he didn’t like.
The elevator door slid closed with the man eying the cleavage more than ever.
It opened with him slumped against the wall, holding his quickly swelling eye.
“Next time, I will poke it out.”
“Jesus fucking ... “ The elevator door closed as Loki stalked out with a smirk. Honestly, why did they assume that someone with boobs could not handle hand to hand combat? The poor thing barely saw the hits coming. Ah, but that was also part of the fun of this guise.
So was being able to simply walk by the guards who liked to stand around with their huge shoulders and try to out-sneer each other. The eyes under their shades trailed after her, but no one moved to stop the lady at all except to mutter into their collar com that the witch lady had arrived.
They didn’t trust the witch. But a witch had proven useful. They just didn’t realize that the witch was proving useful in a number of other places other than here. They did realize that the witch wasn’t so easily controlled either, nor bent to any strong-arm tactics. Gods never bent to mortals like these--they only mockingly bowed from time to time to continue the jest.
“You rang?” Loki asked casually as he wandered into the room. Two girls glanced up from their making out and glanced to the boss. The boss motioned them out and the slinky-clad toys grabbed their shirts and slipped out the door.
“I called you a long time ago, Witch.”
“So sorry. Ran into some hell.”
“Trouble with our rivals?”
“Oh, dear no. I mean actual demons. What was it you wanted?”
The boss gave a disgusted grunt. “I have rats in my basement. Some leaks have gotten to our rivals, and worse, to the Kingpin. I need the chattery rodents out.”
“Mmm, you need me to detect your tell-tale hearts, is that so?” Loki thought briefly. “That I can do. Gather everyone available here. Let them know my magic will be fishing out the faithless.”
“...Done.”
It took time, but by dawn, the men were gathered. Loki walked up the line casually, looking them over. “So, tell me... Who is missing?”
“Two,” one of the body guards said. “Lyles and Jimmy Jetmouth.”
“Rats found.” Loki smirked to the boss. “Now about the favor I want...”
The boss motioned angrily to the men. They hurriedly walked out. “You did no magic.”
“None was needed. My reputation was enough to do what you needed. Lyles and Jimmy could have easily been here, yes? They just didn’t want caught in a closed room where they knew they would be at your tender mercy. So you see, I caught two rats for you.”
“I want them found.”
“Ah, now we must barter, must we. I have done half the work for you already and you will need to pay it forward.”
“You brazen little-.”
“I prefer to think of myself as having more balls than some of your men. Your operation is running smoothly, I have magically warded your building. I have spied out things you could not possibly have known without my scrying.”
“And I have accommodated you.”
“For those services. Oh, come now. I am not insisting you treat me as a goddess or give me shares in your profits. All I ask for in return are favors. Little ones. You know this. Why are you angry?”
The boss’ nostrils continued to flare. It was the attitude. He didn’t like someone with Loki’s attitude. That was entirely the problem. “What is you want?”
Loki smiled, pleased. “There’s a doctor... He has an interesting necklace I want. Could you send some of your boys to fetch it for me?”
“A necklace? That seems a task you could do easily.”
“One would be surprised. Mundane hands can grab easier where enchanted ones cannot. The man is not even aware of the worth of what he holds around his neck. It should not be a difficult task for a score of your boys.”
“Always these strange little baubles!” The boss practically spat. “First the demon’s eye’s emerald, the brimstone ruby, now this?” He folded his arms, working it over in his mind. If nothing else, Loki had learned that for all his huffing, the Fifth Family’s brass usually did follow through with their words and pay their debts accordingly. “Is he armed?”
“Ohhh,” Loki said, smiling slowly. “I would say he’s more of a brawler...”
