Who: CCharles Xavier and Emma Frost
Where: New York, cafe not far from Hawthorne Academy
When: Friday, april 19, 2013 (back)
What: Xavier is reaching out to Emma once again, hoping to gain her aid.
Rating: PG?

Finding Emma was not the difficult part. Approaching her was. The woman, like him, was a powerful telepath, but unlike him, had a more questionable nature when it came to the benevolence of keeping a persona's mental privacy. He had his guards up around the darker corners of his minds, creating a maze of closed doors and endless hallways and deadends, while keeping his focus on the immediate present.

Still, despite his precautions, it was good to see Emma so casual seeming, sitting at a table with her coffee and reading. He was glad she was living what seemed a normal life, and one with a positive effect for young minds as well. So the ever-present optimist in him was prevalent.

"Greetings, Miss Frost. May I...?"

It was hard to miss his approach in his wheelchair. He gestured to the table. There was apology in his mind, understanding just approaching her without warning was affronting, that they had not seen each other in years, but that he had thought it quite inappropriate to approach her at home or at school.

The last time Emma had seen Charles Xavier, she had been ten years younger and something of a completely different person. She'd been studying at university and a member of the Hellfire Club. Things had been darker back then. He'd approached her on an off day, making promises of helping her, of finding a better place for her. She'd rebuffed him with little hesitation and though the past ten years had gone along about as well as she might have hoped, a part of her had always wondered what she might have become had she gone to his school for gifted children.

She'd felt his mind before he'd even entered the cafe, but she hadn't reached out. Emma normally invaded the minds of anyone around her, she didn't have any guilt when it came to that, but it was different with Xavier. He was a telepath like she, quite possibly even stronger than she was. It was partially out of respect and partially out of caution that she didn't jump into his thoughts. Just like he, she shut down her thoughts to make them less accessible.

When he was close enough to speak to her, Emma looked up from the student's paper that she was reading and set it aside. "Charles Xavier," she said dryly by way of greeting. With a hand she gestured for him to join her. "It seems I don't have a choice. It'd be impolite for me to ignore a man in a wheelchair." She glanced at him like a cat might a bird. It was the same look she gave to every man that approached. "To what do I owe this surprise?"

"Would it be impolite?" His smile was amused. "I would not think it so for that reason. Nonetheless, I am glad to have you indulge me." Cause it was no secret. She was indulging him. She had not turned him away utterly. Whether it was because of curiosity or because she had an idea as to why he was here... or both... That was the more difficult thing to say.

"I understand you are teaching now. I am glad." He truly was. "A prestigious school, Hawthorne." He was not attempting to show off he knew about her livelihood. He was opening toward the desired subject. Because neither of them wished to dance around conversation about the weather.

But nor did he say the next thing aloud. I'm sure you have noticed the momentum of the situation.

The MHMRA grace period for registering was over, and the government forces were starting to move. Currently it was quiet, small movements, things teachers could not help but notice. Some of the students, mutants, had disappeared or been transferred. Never directly from school, but news would reach the office the next morning that such-and-such student would not be in attendance any longer at their facility. The only reason it was not gaining more attention was simply because there were so few mutants compared to those who were not--and many whom were not aware of their mutant powers or did a very good job of passing for normal humans.

And Xavier knew where many of them were being taken.

Emma raised a brow. "I hadn't realized I had such a fan in you, darling. I would have sent you postcards." She hadn't kept tabs on Xavier or his school, though it wasn't especially surprising that he'd kept eyes on her. Emma didn't mind. She didn't have much to hide with the exception of her powers and Xavier already knew about them.

I presume you're speaking of the registration act. Is that why you've come to find me today? It was always best, as far as Emma was concerned, to feign ignorance until she knew enough about the situation not to.

"Post cards. Alas, those are going out of style. A pity. I enjoyed sending them to others when I was abroad."

He looked up at the server bringing him a hot tea in a to-go cup. "Thank you."

Of course. The mutant populations are being pressed into concentrated areas, slowly but surely. The pattern in undeniable. They're removing them from the schools.

Emma's face didn't betray her, but there was a certain feeling she was projecting when she spoke to Xavier. She couldn't quite help herself. The registration act nonsense made her angry. I'd noticed one or two being gone from my own school and have tried to impress upon the children who are special that they need to move with extreme caution.

Emma took a sip of her own drink and began to speak casually about things of little importance. It wouldn't do for them to stare at each other and act as though they were speaking without words.

Where are they being taken? Have them come for your children yet? A pause. And why are you here now for me?

The 'act' of holding a conversation while engaged in a deeper one was familiar to them both. With their sharp minds it was a simple task. He even smiled and bantered easily.

I am glad... And there it was. The main reason why he was there. Trying to ask her to look out for the younger ones. Because she, like him, could read, could tell from the ones who said nothing, or if they were thinking of behaving rashly.

Many are just being relocated to new school facilities, especially the younger ones. Small schools that boast more 'one on one' attention. But many caught outside of registration are being taken to prison facilities across the states. There is one on Manhattan Island, Van Kull. The facility goes deeper than it seems. There are also whispers of another facility, but I have yet to be able to find it. And that said quite a bit.

Emma laughed at some light joke Xavier had just shared about unruly students. What she wanted to do was throw something. It was one thing to go after a group of vigilantes, but another entirely to house children in facilities of questionable safety. Xavier could probably pick up on Emma's indignation easily.

It was frustrating to know of something so corrupt and have little to do for it. Emma didn't want to out herself unless she had no other choice. She also didn't want to sit by idly and watch what was going on. What do you want from me, exactly, Charles?

You asked earlier if my school is under attack. The short answer to that is yes. Those who knew the right questions to ask could find Xavier's. He relayed a series of images that relayed the president's visit to the facility, his knowing what they were, and the foreboding hints Xavier had picked up concerning what he was likely to do. Soon, my own identity as a mutant will be entirely compromised. I have registered in accordance with the law because gleaning that I am a mutant myself is not difficult. Though he had taken 'creative license' in being vague concerning the scope of his powers. The children are a top concern.

There are movements, Emma, people starting to organize quietly. Some in ways I would rather not see happen. Others just hoping to protect the younger innocents. I am trying to find allies where I might.

Emma didn't have much love for Lex Luthor. Knowing that he'd gone to Xavier's school and vaguely threatened children made her distaste for the man grow. For a moment, she considered things. What the anti-registration side really needed was a figurehead. They needed a person or persons to stand up and publicly decry registration for what it truly was.

Explain. Emma's thoughts were calm. And what is it you want me to do exactly? A pause. And why should I help?

Emma had gotten as far in life as she had because she didn't trust people lightly. An alliance might be useful, but Emma needed to know all of the facts. If she played her cards wrong she'd certainly out herself. If it came to that, she'd rather be in control of the situation.

I am doing what I can on the pubic side of things. He knew it was unlikely to have escaped her notice. He had been tirelessly campaigning for privacy rights since the law's enactment and holding several conferences and rallies to provide evidence of the social discrepancies that were sure to occur with the law's enactment. But I do not know how long I will be allowed to keep voicing my opinions in public.

He sighed a little, letting their outward conversation slip as he drew a drink from the tea now that it was cooled enough. Nothing that would require you to be public about your abilities. In fact--that is one of the reasons I come to you. You are unknown, off their map. He looked at her steadily, a weak smile managed. And the only reason for you to help would simply be because you want to. I present no other means to attempt to persuade you to this cause.

That was truthful. In his thinking, if Emma did not want to help, he would not, nor could, obligate her to do so. What he was presenting her with was a choice to do so. If she wished and where she was willing.

I see.

Emma, for her part, did want to do good. She simply wasn't interested in sticking her neck out too far for someone she didn't know well. She had a bad feeling about whatever it was that Xavier wanted her to do, largely because he wasn't being specific.

This entire mess was entirely stressful. Emma hoped that the registration act would be repealed, but wasn't quite so hopeful as to expect it to be struck down anytime soon. I will help where I can, Charles, but I'm not putting myself in danger for you. And, she added quickly, in the future, you may want to come to me in more private a setting.

I am hoping to keep as many people from danger as possible. But you are like me, Miss Frost. You see and hear what others cannot. And deeper than his morals would allow.

For now, I wish only to inform you of what is going on. You must make your own decision on how and where you are willing to help on your own. He gave a friendly smile over a sip of tea and an amused eyebrow raise. "And that I can do."

He pushed a card with his contact information on it toward her. When I know more...

The message wasn't lost on Emma. She had fewer scruples than Charles Xavier did; she didn't even need to know the man well to know that much.

Fair enough. Emma took the card and looked it over. She was smiling in a pleasant, business-like way. Do take care in how you communicate with me, Charles. I'm certain you're being monitored. Send me things though someone else's email address or use those lovely powers of yours, yes?
