Who: Jessica Chambers
NPCs: Cadre of lawyers
What: Jesse goes to register, basically ties up all the resources for one day
When: April 19th
Where: NYC
Jesse had this worked out. She felt the need to register because didn’t exactly feel secure enough in her secret ID to not do so, and another retirement was simply out of the question. She had a company to run, and employees depending on her for a paycheck. She couldn’t be on the run. She just really didn’t like this whole DNA collection. Who knew what that would show? Wally pinged as human, and she figured the same would be true of her, but her mother, while never saying it, was most likely a mutant given her lack of explanation for her powers.
So she had a plan i was a gamble, but it was the only play she felt she had. “Thank you, George.” She said to the driver from the backseat of the car she was in. “I’m not sure how long I’ll be, so take the rest of the day. I’ll hail a cab back.” It was a bit of a lie. Who was she kidding? She totally had tennis shoes in her briefcase.
She waited on the curb for the rest of her party. In quick succession they arrived. She’d dealt with a couple of these lawyers before, but the lead corporate attorney for Quickstart had picked the rest of them. She just hoped they did their homework on the MHRA.
She entered the office to see only a couple of people in the waiting area. No one she knew, but that didn’t really mean much. One of the men was an older man, she could only think he was waiting on someone. She was just now realizing that this whole thing probably did bring the crazies out. All kinds of people claiming to be Superman and Batman, because they apparently didn’t understand what this really was and thought they’d go down in history for someone else’s heroic acts. Or they could just be crazy.
She strolled up to the counter, heels clicking the floor. She pulled off her sunglasses and cleared her throat. “I’m Jessica Chambers. I’m here to register.” The woman at the desk looked up and noticed the group. She looked instantly confused.
“Are you a group? Um... like a team.”
“Oh dear, no.” Jesse responded. “They’re my lawyers. We’re going to need the biggest room you’ve got. They have a lot of questions before I sign anything.”
“I don’t think that-”
Jesse looked unimpressed. “Believe me it’s neccessary. They protect me from signing anything of a dubious nature.”
“Alright.” She still looked unsure like she wasn’t sure what to do. “I’ll find you a place.”
She found a room and handed Jesse the forms. She left the room, and Jesse sat down in a chair and idly flipped through the paperwork. “Take your time. No rush.” She said to the lawyers.
And take their time they did. They needed help with every question that turned into a philosophical debate on the law. They tied up the staff for hours, burying them in questions and paperwork. When someone with a labcoat came in for her sample, Jesse gave a hint of an apologetic smile and shook her head.
“My client is not providing a DNA sample.” One of them started.
“Such a thing is blatantly against her constitutional rights. My collegue over there is already preparing for appellate court.” The other lawyer gave a smug little wave from her laptop.
Jesse picked up her briefcase. “So wer’re done then? It’s seven thirty. I had no idea it was that late. Any additional questions for me can be routed through them.” She said handing her a stack of cards and casually walking from the room.
