Bart could have said he hadn't been thinking about it; but that would be a lie. He had been thinking about it- a lot- in spite of how he tried to push it out of his mind. Every last word of the bill that had become law had been etched permanently into his brain and legal jargon and political jibberish rolled around in his head.
He thought about it. He thought about it almost incessantly- except when he playing video games really. Should he register? Should he not register? What would happen if he didn't? And worse- what would happen if he did? Would they find out he was from the future? Could they trace his DNA? Could they trace it back to his grandfather-- would Wally know? He had to tell him. He had to tell him what they were going to find if he registered before Wally told him to register.
And he started to. Really he did! He got as far as opening his mouth, then stopped and looked away instead, as if the cookies in the oven were going to cook faster if he stared at them instead of looking at his cousin.
"Yeah..." Bart glanced over at Wally, then back at the oven because you couldn't trust those cookies not to cook if you weren't looking at them, "Am I supposed to register too?"
