"It has before. I'm tougher than I look, apparently." It was no lie, he could take quite a beating and still come out on top of the fight..but he always hoped it never came to that. All that training was for keeping him out of danger whenever it came to trading fisticuffs and seeing himself out of danger. He didn't blink when the glass gave beneath the sudden piercing of the round that pierced the first man's heart. Gutsy shot, considering he could have been wearing some armor beneath..never know nowadays with these shifty SHIELD agents going undercover and mad scientists flooding the black market with their illegal tools. But both men dropped and the masked assassin simply shifted to get a bit more comfortable as she turned to face him. Hand already tightened on the grip of the weapon, just in case he had to swing it down on her. Never know when someone was trying to tie up a loose end.
"Gonna run off without exchanging contact info? No Facebook friend status?" The Soldier smirked a bit as he watched her sling the weaponry over her shoulder, nothing sexier than a gal who knew how to use a gun..especially a piece of machinery like that rifle she had just disassembled. But then she called him James.
It was night, but he wasn't in Gotham. He was on a roof, looking over a decimated tree line. He was in France. It smelled like smoke and gunpowder, the air was getting cold..but not cold enough for snow. The rain fell in small, light droplets against the dark green uniform he wore as he adjusted his grip on the stock of the Springfield while he stared through the scope. He knew that the sniper was still out there, looking for officers to pick off now that the town had been retaken and had caused a bit of a ruckus by taking out that colonel during the armored push. He heard footsteps behind him, not Steve, because Steve was with the big guns in Italy. Had to be one of the guys, he was betting on Pinky. "You sure you should be up here at night, James?"
It was only a second, but it seemed like hours and his head began to throb almost immediately as he took a step back and away from the edge of the roof. Rifle lowering immediately as he blinked his blue eyes rapidly for a moment or two, looking around the roof for a few seconds. Once he gained a bit more control over his heart rate, he spoke with a voice that sounded a lot more in control than he felt at the moment. "I'll keep that in mind. You should probably get out of here with the incriminating weapon." The Soldier wasn't exactly sure had happened or why he suddenly felt so sad, but whatever...thing he had seen was slipping away like a dream from the evening before.
