What: Hate Crime interrupted.
Rating: PG-13

His liegelord was occupied and did not wish to be disturbed. He'd encouraged Paris to venture out, take a look at America.
Paris didn't much like it. But he walked the streets of this city, sunglasses on to avoid disturbing the mob bystanders. It was, indeed, important to get out some. There were some of Their People out there who might need help.

Case in point, the thoughts of fear coming from a nearby alley, and the associated thoughts around it. The girl had curly red hair, scaley green skin... and a knife to her throat.

The man holding the knife would feel his arms, in fact his entire body, seized completely in a crackle of green-gold energy. "Miss. Carefully move away from the blade. I know there is not much room, so be careful."

Unfortunately, Paris knew none of the subtlety that some with psychic abilities might use to calm the victim's panic. This could get complicated.

A routine sweep of the city during midday brought his attention to Suicide Slums, the roughest part of Metropolis. Even shining beacons of hope had their shade, after all. Flashes of green and gold light gave him a target, and with a WHOOSH! of air that stirred the loose papers and debris around the alley, the Man of Steel arrived.

What he found made him lift his eyebrows. A curious scene, a man frozen with a knife pressed to young woman (with scales) throat while nearby a young man was the source of the energy. Superman's boots touched down noiselessly as he gave each party a quick scan with his eyes. Other than an accelerated heart rate (which was normal under the circumstances), the woman was fine.

"Son," he said, speaking to the one with the knife, "why don't you think this over, and let the young woman go. There are better options here that don't involve violence. My friend here," and a nod at Paris, "seems to have stayed your hand, but you still have the choice of doing a bit of good yourself." And finally, he addressed the young mutant girl with a kind smile that radiated warmth from his entire body. "It's going to be fine, miss, don't you worry."

The girl, who was very confused on top of terror and not being sure how to safely extricate herself, was visibly relieved by the assurance for reasons of Superman.

Paris didn't get it. He didn't understand why this fellow who seemed well-meaning enough would want to trust this cur to make the right decision.

But the perpetrator's mind is radiating acquiescence, so Paris, scowling, releases him enough for him to drop the knife and let go of the girl -- it's easier than forcing the limbs himself.
But the attacker's fear isn't quite strong enough not to start saying a few choice and very ignorant words about 'freaks running around like they're real people.' And then there's another green-gold flash and the attacker cringes, still rooted to the ground.

Paris's flickering eyes look over his sunglasses at Superman. "I suppose your optimism did you credit, but clearly, he will just do it again. It must be ensured he will not hurt anyone further."

The former knife-wielder starts to look like he isn't breathing properly. The girl, backed away considerably, looks shocked.

Kal calmly put a hand on Paris' shoulder, gently. "Then we'll report a hate crime and let the police become aware of it." A look over at the once again frozen individual. "Funny thing about hatred, it spreads more easily in a faceless crowd. Very few individuals are ready to shoulder it entirely alone when their identity is known. And this person strikes me more as the listening crowd than an actual leader." A glance down to scan the boy's pocket. "Isn't that right, Mr. Jenkins?"

The boy flinched, his eyes slipped away to a wall, his hate filled mutterings ceasing. Superman turned his attention back to Paris. "And as you know, hate creates more hatred. If he died in this alley today, his cause would have a martyr." His voice went quiet, just so that Paris could hear. "And the young woman that you just saved? Doesn't need to have her hero turned just as quickly into a murderer."

Paris considered this. Especially the girl. She'd been through enough. "Point conceded," he said, releasing Mr. Jenkins entirely. "In this singular instance. I certainly do not actually trust the American government to handle these things rightly."

"Then if you'll excuse me for a moment, I'll be taking this gentleman to the nearest police station, and then be back. In the meantime, I believe she wants to thank you." Giving them both a brief smile, he was gone with the knife wielding individual in a blur of red and blue, leaving Paris alone with his new fan.

Paris will nod. And later returns will find Paris speaking gently but somehow still... intensely,
"...I can understand about family. But if I cannot convince to leave this godforsaken country, then at least be more careful. You should not have to be; but it this is a bleak world, and it will get worse before it gets better, so please take care of yourself."

He touched down once more, giving the two space, and clearing his throat to indicate his return. The girl gave him a shaky smile and a quiet murmur of thanks. In response, Superman gave her the same kind smile as before. "He's been reported, but your testimony about what happened here today will help." She shrank back, and his expression turned sympathetic. "I know you're scared, and you have every right to be. But know that you're stronger than you realize. And everyone is stronger than a bully. Please consider talking to the police."

She moved away from the two, farther down the alley and he turned to the younger man. "Don't believe I caught your name," he said, an easy smile forming. A hand was offered. "Superman. Very interesting talent you have there."

A polite, though possibly awkward, handshake ensues, since Exodus does not so much shake hands by any modern standard as grab Superman's wrist, but by his calm expression, he clearly thinks he's being perfectly normal.

"Exodus. I appreciate ... your intent." A pause "Do you really trust the 'authorities'?"

If he's made a social gaffe, Superman doesn't let on. He's become used to a wide variety of ways of greeting another over the years and can graciously accept almost anything by now. After all, he's friends with Batman and the Dark Knight's brief conversation skills.

"Exodus, it's very nice to meet you. I'm sorry it had to be under such circumstances." He nodded. "I do. There's no such thing as a perfect person, but yes. There are a great number of the police here that do work for the peaceful habitation in Metropolis." He glanced over at where the girl had left. "She's a mutant. I understand her fears. She feels like an outsider in a world of humans. I know what that feels like." Looking back at Exodus, he met his gaze levelly. "I'm alien after all. Humanoid, at best."

"And if they are required to enter her situation, location, and mutation into a federal database?" His eyes are flickering anxiously as he repeats. "This world has never been good with ... differences. It will all get worse before it gets better."

He noted the change in demeanor, the anxiousness from the young man. "You want to be sure that she isn't persecuted after this by authorities. Son, there isn't any federal law out there that would do that to anyone. But if you're worried, I'll speak again to the officer, and make sure that her anonymity is preserved."

"It hasn't," he said in sad agreement, glancing around at their surroundings. "Sorry... would you mind if we took this conversation someplace else? There's a view I think you should see."

"The top of the Daily Planet building. It's a beautiful view of the city, one that everyone should have the fortune of taking in." A little smile. "I can get us there pretty quickly if you'll just let me take hold of your arm."

Paris raised an eyebrow. "I will accept the venue, but -- how do you Americans say? -- we have not even had dinner." The green-gold light crackles a littlte more, and he gets off the ground. "We can both fly like civilized people."

Kal's smile widened as the youth lifted off the alley floor. "Wonderul!" he said, grinning widely. "Try to keep up then."

And the Man of Steel disappeared in a WHOOSH of red and blue, appearing seconds later arcing out in a path along the sky above, heading for the Daily Planet, and the spinning golden globe that sat atop it.

Superman will only have to wait a few seconds for Exodus to catch up.

"It is... a nice building," he manages.

"It's really more about the view," he replied as he touched down on the top of it. "Gives me perspective. Metropolis is a very beautiful city, especially when the sun hits those buildings just right."

"But I also come up here to get a little perspective." Looking down, his smile softened. "There are a great many people down there, all different types. And not just humans, others from different planets and places, all trying to find a place here. All equal even if they aren't the same." Kal looked at Exodus. "Your people, the mutants. As I said before, I know ... for a very long time, that things haven't been easy for them. That they've felt like a group that has no place, although they look very much like a non-mutant human being." His expression saddened slightly. "I wish I could change that. I'm trying, however."

"And so are some of the people down there." He nodded down at the streets. "Sometimes, it's hard to see hope through so much hate, but believe me, it's there. There are more sympathizers for mutants than you might expect in Metropolis, unfortunately, the hate groups are simply louder." He paused. "I do wish that knowing that gives you some hope."
