"Oh turn it up, Daddy, it's my favorite."
"Sure thing, kiddo."
With a smile on his face, Jonathan Whitman turned up the radio for his daughter, Rachel, who sat in the back of the auburn Saturn Ion was he driving through busy Bludhaven traffic. They had spent the evening Christmas shopping and were on the way home to the promises of hot coco and freshly baked cookies. Life could scarcely be better. And for once, workaholic Jonathan eased up, tuned in to what his daughter was singing in the backseat, and actually joined her.
At least, until the unthinkable happened.
"♪...All is calm, all is bri-♪"
CRASH!
"Hold on, kid!" Jonathan screamed as something big and feathery landed on the hood of the car, smashing it in sending the car into a telephone pole. Fortunately due to the heavy traffic they were not driving real fast, but the collision still sent the heap from the hood and onto the street.
Jonathan cursed, told Rachel to stay in the car and hastily got out to see what had fallen out of the sky, but already the figure was moving. A man. With wings, and some sort of bird helm.
"Are you... alright?" Jonathan asked tentatively, stepping forward.
Hawkman turned to look at the man, as he rolled his head from one shoulder to other, while shaking out his wings. Blood covered his arms and his chest from a myriad of wounds, but they seemed to concern him just as much as the cold weather seemed to effect his bare skin.
"Had worst. You should get back into your car now, before-"
A shrill series of shrieks cut him off, as he looked upward to see a half dozen winged creatures swooping down at him with talons outstretched. Hawkman went to warn the man, but there was no need. At the first sign of trouble he had already snatched his daughter and was half down the block when the winged creatures hit Hawkman, swarming around and over him as they attacked.
