Billy would like to pretend like his family wasn't out here every year, but the truth is... Well, they almost always were. His mother liked for everything to be perfect, and, whether they liked it or not, there would always be at least one thing that would get ruined. Either his father hadn't checked something soon enough, something wasn't taken out of the oven fast enough, or his little brothers got into a fight ruining one thing or another which always meant either Billy was hazarding the trip to the store alone or with his father. Today, though, his mother was feeling exceptionally picky, so she came along with them. It must be because his grandma was coming over this year. She was, after all, notoriously picky when it came to pie.
His little brothers, thankfully, were back home with his other grandma. Why he was chosen to come on this field trip, he hadn't a clue other than to be the tie breaking vote. If there was one thing his family loved more than turkey, it was pie, but Billy would pick pumpkin over everything every time. So, while his mother and his father foraged through the remaining pies (slim pickings, mind you), Billy hung back behind them, adjusting his coat, and fidgeted with the earbud in his ear blasting the beginnings of some song he wasn't in the mood for. He sighed, dug into his pocket, and quietly skipped through his catalog of songs.
Billy hadn't even noticed Teddy, at first. With the store as crazed as it was, he hadn't thought much about someone stopping next to him. Lucky for Teddy, Billy's iPod was still silent, so when he glanced up at him and held his gaze for a few moments trying to place him. Nothing. He glanced behind him for a second as he straightened up and pulled out his earbuds. Guess the guy really was talking to him.
"Uh," he cleared his throat, "yeah." He offered him a small, though unsure, smile and returned his awkward-but-cute wave. Good start, right? Pretty solid. "I don't work here," he replied but then paused momentarily horrified as he glanced down at his clothes. "Does it look like I work here?" Note to self: Black Friday is shopping day.
