Pressing closer against him, Lois wrapped an arm around his waist, as much to comfort him as herself. They were in for a long, hard road ahead, and there was no use pretending they weren't.
"They were fooled," she reminded him of what he already knew. "Lex made a good sales pitch and America bought it. He's a smart man and he knew exactly what they wanted and told them that's what he'd give them. You can't fault them for wanting to believe in something other than the same old shit we've been getting."
The status quo had been so bad for so long, that when something different came along, no matter what it was, if it was big and shiny enough to attract their attention, it had been worth listening to. "You wouldn't be you if you weren't worried." Lois reached up to give him a lingering kiss. "Luthor's going to do some terrible things - we know that - and you're going to protect this country from him."
Taking his chin in her hand, she turned his eyes to hers, making sure he could see her expression. "And this time, I'm going to help. Because the world needs you in it, and I need you, too. All the other reasons aside - I'm not going to wait for him to take from me the only thing that matters. Like Hell. You understand, Farm Boy?"
