Re: Carter & Dinah continued
When Dinah cast that look upon him, the kid actually took a step back, and seemed torn between whether or not he was more intimidated by Carter or by her. His mouth worked, but no words came out. In the end he just bowed his head, turned, and walked half way back across the dance floor before stopping to wait. Apparently, he felt that was a much safer distance.
If Carter had not been so irritated at having to leave, especially when things were looking to get real interesting he would have laughed out loud at the prospect of Dinah getting into a parking lot brawl with a gang of ruffians. Even still the thought intrigued him, but he refrained from asking her to tag along, in consideration of the kid's stupid comment.
On his end he wanted to ask her for her number, but knew that at this point there was no use in asking. Not until she had checked him out. And while he could have handed over his own, he was fairly confident that she would be able to track him down.
The kid called after him, but Carter lingered a moment longer as he regarded Dinah. "You're welcome, I hope to see you soon too" would not do for his evening, so instead Carter reached for hand once more, and kissed the back of it.
"As contraries are known by contraries, so is the delight of presence best known by the torments of absence", he said as he rose.
"Good night, Dinah." He gave her a last look and turned on his heel to cross the dance floor. Depending upon whether or not she happened to be watching, she would have seen Carter give the kid a little hit upside the head before they disappeared into the crowd.
