"Trying?" Which meant he wasn't quite there yet. "Not this week," Pete countered, though it was more for himself than anyone else. This was not the week to quit smoking. It definitely wasn't the week to quit drinking, either. "But suit yourself." He shrugged and dropped the pack on the bar in front of him, just in case the other guy changed his mind. Charitable? Not at all. But Pete was looking for a bit of normalcy in the afternoon. And he'd had enough to drink that talking to strangers didn't seem as dumb as it did when he was sober.
