She wondered if other people were feeling this way, as if she didn't fit in her own skin. For a few short days she'd felt lighter, faster, and happier than she had in a long time. Now she just felt lost and confused, and although things had gone back to normal - something she'd been talking about since the change first occurred - Pepper had no idea what to do with herself.
Actually, not all of that was entirely accurate. She hadn't felt happier than she'd felt in a long time. Most of the time, she'd been terrified. But there had been one moment when she'd not only been as happy as she'd ever been, but even happier. It was a moment she'd never forget, and she had no idea what to do about it, because she felt pulled in a million different directions at once, between what was right and wrong, what she wanted and what was possible.
Work was something she understood, and luckily things had slowed down enough for her to have kept up with that. Going down to check on Tony, bring him Red Bull and get some signatures, she found him working, his back to her. Pepper had watched the last battle; had seen some of the familiar faces in the hordes of zombies facing him and the Avengers, and judging by his behavior since his return, could only imagine how difficult it had been.
She had seen him like this before, and though she'd done her best to help him then, they had been different people and it had taken time. Lots of time. Making sure he heard her heels clicking as she approached, Pepper placed her tablet and his drink down and sat next to him.
