BATGIRL RETURNS, AGAIN? by Vicki Vale Fans of superheroics and conspiracy theorists alike took to the web three years ago when people began to notice that the vigilante known as Batgirl had disappeared suddenly from the streets. "The problem with growing attached to people behind a mask is that the mystery can be just as harmful as it is helpful," claims Dr. Henry Watkins, the well-respected sociologist and lifelong Gothamite whose research into the ongoing spike in vigilantism is used widely by the GCPD in profiling these individuals. "When a policeman or firefighter is killed in duty, we see their faces in the paper and can honor and mourn them. Now here are individuals waging a war on an oftentimes insane and always violent criminal element without the safety protocol utilized by the police, and if they disappear, it is often assumed that this is for one of two reasons: either they have relocated or they have been killed. Of course, there is no confirmation of what we feel in our hearts, leaving the wound unclosed." Many had taken to theorizing about the ultimate fate of Batgirl, with people making wild speculation as to her identity, but all of them were silenced when a year ago, Batgirl re-emerged from her two year break. Just one year later, these same people are talking once more. Many compelling arguments have been made, based off eyewitness testimonial, to suggest that there are currently no less than two active Batgirls, and the Batgirl who began fighting crime might not even be the original. Batman enthusiasts have weighed in, noting the differences in costume and the signature red hair sported by the original Batgirl which has been resurfacing in eyewitness reports. Also lending credence to their arguments is the fact that many recent instances of Batgirl thwarting minor crimes such as mugging and robbery have happened in an increasingly disparate radius, with crimes often being stopped on opposite sides on the city within minutes of each other.
