It wasn't until he reached the border of Turkey that he realized no one was coming for him.
At first, Damian had been content to chalk up his progress to his intelligence and savvy. Slipping out of the compound had been pathetically easy and he had made his way to Aleppo without any significant problems. Once in the city, he had paused to take stock of the situation and of his limited resources. He couldn't just travel aimlessly, he needed to have a destination in mind. Since Africa wasn't an option, Damian had opted for Europe figuring Mother was more likely to look for him East Asia. He'd arranged transportation and been on his way. However, after a day and half, he had to admit that things had been far too easy.
There should have been some token resistance or at least subtle signs that he was being observed, but instead there was nothing. As much as Damian was loathe admit it, his skills weren't quite that good. Although he knew all about the empire and had even started laying seeds for his own connections and protocols, it was safe to say that he didn't have many secrets from his mother. Given Talia's position, her authority and her own impunity, the conclusion was all too obvious. Damian had been allowed to slip his leash simply because she hadn't bothered to have him pursued.
It was not only frustrating but also insulting. He wondered if Mother viewed his flight as a show of independence and initiative, as a fit of futile rebellion, or merely as a nuisance she lacked the time to personally address. All interpretations seemed equally likely depending on her mood. Damian scowled.
The question was, what did he want to achieve? What did he want her to understand once they were reunited. He wanted his mother to stop treating him as a child, that much was a given. He could make his own decisions and look after himself. Then there was the fact that he was growing weary of her constant demands of him. One would figure running a secret empire would be interesting, but nooooo...
He needed to show that he could be independent. While subversion would be to his credit, he couldn't push it too far. He needed to show competence, not stage a coup. Best to leave the greater affairs alone. It was more important to show that he could make his own decisions, even if his priorities didn't align with mother's desires.
And there were so many things mother didn't quite approve of.
Damian smiled slowly. He did some quick calculations in his head. From Greece a boat to Italy, a brief respite in Monaco, and then a plane to America. Without any complications, that should put in Gotham before the end of next week.
