Carol didn't say anything at that, just gave a quarter turn to look at Hal with an eyebrow arched. He did not want to finish that sentence. Which apparently he was well aware of and flashed her a smile. Carol just nodded in response.
"I bet," she remarked. "You know what I mean though. Service. Let me put it this way, I don't do it because I like to travel. I do it because I believe in this country. And because I believe in freedom. And the freedoms of others.
"So, no, this is not really my thing, but I can appreciate that it might be for some people. Just not me." The happiness boat had long set sail for Carol. Right around the time her dad started flicking lit cigarettes at her and lofting beer cans at her head.
