Tears to Ice
Who: Elektra Natchios, OT Reactions
Where: New York City
When: [Backpost] Saturday, June 7, late morning
What: The Funeral of Hugo Natchios, Greek Ambassador to the United States. Snowfall begins.
Rating: SFW
A clearer day could not have been asked for. The sun shone down on the funeral, washing those gathered in warmth and light, chasing away all shadows on the ground, but not those in the heart of Elektra Natchios. Somber chanting filled the air. Those present who were also members of the Greek Orthodox Church joined in the chanting. Those who knew the words joined in. Many were silent out of respect. For the woman, clothed in black and scarlet, some words spoke louder to her heart.
"Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.
My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.
My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.
Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.
Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts."
There were many present, friends, associates, respected relations from the far ranging political spectrum of Hugo Natchios' life. Many were strangers, come to pay their respects. There was only one family member in attendance - the only family the man had left - his daughter. Tears streamed down Elektra's face, but she stood as still as death, as silent as the grave Hugo would soon be lowered into. Face cloaked behind a mourner's veil, her lips did not move along with the others who chanted the Psalm. It was not that she knew the words; she knew them well. It was not that she had left the church; God simply did not fit into her world any more. It was not that she did not mourn her father's passing; she acknowledged her own as well. A decision had been made.
"Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.
I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts.
I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.
I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes always, even unto the end.
It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law."
Matt comforted her, but Elektra was beyond comfort. She felt the sky darken before she saw it, looking up as clouds closed overhead. Her tears froze upon her cheeks in the span of a heartbeat. Her final tears. She would mourn no longer. She cared not even what had caused this impossible change in the weather. As the snowflakes fell on the gathered crowd and people gasped in surprise, the priest pushed onward, guiding his flock through the strength of will and tradition.
"Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.
I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts.
Hear my voice according unto thy loving kindness: O Lord, quicken me according to thy judgment.
Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.
Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments."
Elektra Natchios was dead.
No. The world was dead to her.
Her course laid before her, as clear as the frozen tears she wiped from her expressionless face. Vengeance, unto oblivion. No mercy for the dark ones. No future for the Hand.
