Mockery was not something The Joker handled well. In the whole of Gotham everyone knew there were two people you didn't piss off. The Bat and The Clown. In fact, if you were to believe the rumors, ridicule and mocking laughter followed the Joker everywhere he went before the fateful accident that twisted and ultimately snapped him mind. People died for that kind of laughter aimed at the clown.
Today was not that day.
In fact, that laughter of Luthor's made Joker's grin stretch wider to near inhuman proportions. "Me." And he was all smiles about that idea. "Oh ye of little faith and hair, Lexie."
"Mmmmm, Yes. That human shadow," His voice dropped an octave, matching Luthor's delivery for those two words "has proved to be quite a lot of fun over the years. Fun that I've enjoyed." He let that hang in the air. "And if you think for one moment this is even about that boyscout who can't keep his underwear on the inside, you need to burn that diploma." Joker moved towards the large windows and stared out over the whole of Metropolis.
"No no no nononononononooooo.." That last syllable stretched on uncomfortably long. "This is not about him. This is about the greatest performance of all time." His head turned to look at Lex, hair falling back down into his face. "A final performance. One way or the other Lexie.. someone isn't walking away from this. That mere human shadow gets robbed of a best friend by me.. the same one that's been picking his way through Bat-lites all these years. Oh I think I'll get the chair for sure after that! Or who knows! Maybe Bats will go Batty and strangle me himself!" Joker mimed hands at his throat and laughed the whole time.
"Or I do what I do best." The cackle subsided. "I turn his little mind upon itself. Push him to the very edge of all those rules he swore to never break.. and have him shatter them all." Joker drew closer to Lex. The stench of acetone and chemicals was heavy about him. "And once the deed is done and I'm not longer in the picture.. Batty is deprived of his rock. And you..." He touched his chin to his chest, laughter breaking the words up. Those black eyes stared up at Lex's. "You would have been right all along. A time bomb waiting to happen. The world would turn to you for guidance. His people would shun him. And how well do you think murder would sit on his mind? On his.." He rolled the next word around in his mouth and found it to be disgusting, "soul? Hmm? There are far worse things to do to a man or an alien than kill him. Destroy the thing he upholds. Tarnish the symbol. Then what good is he to anyone?"
