As he explained Selina's eyes didn't leave his face, her body soft and still. She was trying to relax, forcing her body to stay still under his hand as he spoke, but it was difficult. She tried to imagine how it would feel to have a child and not even know of their existence. To miss out out on their early years, not even know their face – and then to know how they'd been brought up, to realise the methods involved were morally opposed to everything you believed in. To know that they had never really been a child in the first place. Selina thought she might feel anger towards towards Talia for what she'd done, but she found that she just pitied her. To bear a child then raise him in such a way, to have him be a weapon – it broke her heart.
Not only that, but the conception, it horrified her. It was painful. Looking back at Bruce's almost Grecian features, so straight and firm. She didn't known he could keep his feelings buried so deep. The way he closed his eyes when he spoke of Talia though, she could tell how much it hurt him.
But love could do that. Love was where it all seemed to start.
Reaching up, Selina brushed a few stray hairs from his forehead. “You can make the difference in his life, Bruce. Your family can, together. Everyone has a history, you and I know more than most. The important thing is that he's in the right place now, and he's your son – he's strong.”
Selina wanted to add that she would help – do whatever she could to make Damian feel welcome. But somehow she didn't think it was her place to get involved – not yet. It was up to Bruce to invite her in. For now she would be there for him and be content to wait. It was odd, knowing him for so long, but not really knowing him at all. It was as if they'd started a fresh, two completely different people now. An amalgamation of lives that were so familiar but so different. Selina's hand strayed from his face, coming to rest on his upper arm, squeezing it gently.
“And so are you. You're strong. If the only thing left of you was your smile and your little finger, you'd still be more of a man than anyone I've ever known.” A soft smile ghosted over Selina's face as she spoke.
“And I think you know me well enough to know I'm certainly not one back away from a challenge. I'll be here --” Selina moved her hand again, her palm coming to rest over his heart. “We both have a past. It doesn't change anything.”
