Doug folded the note back up and smiled a bit, relieved that the news wasn't bad. He looked back at Stephanie, impressed that she'd spotted the agent. Either she was the only one in school who had, or she was the only one to ever try saying something about it. "Are we talking about you, or the guy who's standing outside with his reflective shades?"
Doug took a bite out of his sandwich, mildly watching her eat the potatoes with impressive aplomb. She was proving to be more of a mystery than even before, and he found himself guessing what she might do. She could hit hard, she could sneak well enough to stay off the scent of the Agent outside, she could observe well enough to know he'd been following Doug, and she'd gone out of her way to help him... or at least to make sure he knew that he might be in danger. She was friends with Batgirl. She was the daughter of a costumed criminal. All in all, she was kind of impressive, far more than a mere high school girl.
It was actually a little embarrassing to acknowledge she had so many qualities he found attractive.. That wasn't even something Doug wanted to dwell on for long, so before he could spend too much time admiring her, and regardless of whether it was okay with the Agency or not, Doug said quietly, "Hugh is a married father of one, owns a Golden Labrador and is considering getting another dog, doesn't like any music made after 1980... and is a SHIELD Agent ensuring the school remains safe while I finish out my school year."
He frowned. Since he'd explained to her what he had intended to do a few weeks ago, Stephanie deserved to know what had happened. "I set a trap for..." He took the note, and scribbled the stylized question mark that was the Riddler's calling card. "It failed. He got away. They're worried he might try to seek revenge, so I've been located someplace else, and..." he couldn't help but look disappointed as he said this, "I won't be coming back to Gotham Heights next year."
Doug searched her eyes for understanding. "I'm sorry. I wanted to stop him, as much for you as for me. I failed you."
