Tommy looked bored. He had one elbow propped up on the counter as he slopped food into serving trays. This was probably what it felt like to have a part time job. Just another thing to add to list entitled 'No Way In Hell.' At least he wasn't asking people if they wanted fries with that. (The soup kitchen didn't even have fries, but they did have some halfway decent tater tots.)
For his part, Tommy hadn't been the most pleasant server. He did make eye contact but also shrugged more than he should have. There were also a few comments of, "If you don't like it, man, then don't eat it." for the more fussy patrons. Overall though, he didn't treat anyone in the line differently than he'd treated anyone else. Sure some of them might be dirt poor, at best, or homeless, at worse, but sometimes you just couldn't catch a break. Sure a few of them probably had issues but, so what? Everyone had those.
He noticed Kate looking at him and forced a smile onto his face. Yeah, this was great! It was exactly what he liked to do with his free time. Not. He gave Kate an expectant look, gaze cutting to the wall clock.
"You do this a lot?" he said, instead of asking 'how much longer?'
