Who: Kyle Rayner and OPEN!
where: Bar in Gotham City
When: May 21rst, 2012
What: After intercepting and destroying a yellow power ring in Gotham city, Kyle drops in on a random bar to celebrate his birthday with a tall cool one.
Rating: Presumably safe for work.
"I don't see anything up here, Salaak. And I'm hardly in the mood for a wild goose chase."
"Just because you are upset that the female you would have liked to have exchanged bodily fluids with told you that she was already mated on the day you were borne from your mother's womb is no need to be in a foul mood, Lantern Rayner. You have your mission. See to it."
As Kyle hovered in the air over Gotham, staring down at his upraised hand and the green projection of Salaak that was shining from his ring, he considered pointing out once more that this job should have technically gone to Hal. Hal, who was actually the official Lantern of this sector. But then it was not as if he had anything better to do at the moment other than drink himself into oblivion at Heroes', which he had been doing quite contently until he was interrupted. The only bright spot of the entire day had been a quick visit out to California to see his mother, but other than that it had been a normal day, except of course for the revelation that Jen had somehow hooked up beneath his nose.
"Sure thing", Kyle said, winking out the image of the Protocol Officer of the Corps before he could say anything else.
"Worst birthday ever", Kyle said to no one in particular, as he stretched his arms out and arched his back, yawning a bit. He was just about to initiate another scan, when he saw it. At first it was no more than a pin prick of yellow light in the fair distance that could have easily been mistaken for a shooting star. Only Kyle knew that it was something much more than that.
"There you are", he said, flying toward the yellow power ring on an intercept course. His orders had been to halt and destroy the ring before it could find a wielder, and though that seemed a simple enough task on the surface, the actual process was something far different. His initial energy blasts came no where near the ring, so that he found himself chasing it back toward the city, until the chase resembled a dog fight. Around, up, and down tall buildings he raced after the ring, handicapped by his inability to fire most of the time as he had no desire to damage property or injure a civilian.
"Come here, you little..."
Abruptly the ring broke toward open sky, instilling in Kyle a mixture of relief and sudden dread, as he recognized Arkham Asylum in the distance-which was pretty much the last place he would ever want a yellow power ring to find a wielder.
An aura of green light radiated around him, and concentrated on his shoulder as he materialized a massive cannon there, with a targeting sight that formed over his right eye. "Just one more shot.. have to make it good", he said as he focused, drawing a breath before he fired as John had once told him to do.
A massive bolt of green energy blasted forth from his cannon, with a sound reminiscent of thunder, bathing the Gotham skyline in green light for several long seconds.
"Ring, scan for an energy signature on that power ring."
"No energy signature detected."
"Hell yes", Kyle said as he flew above the clouds, slowing down his flight. "At least one thing went right tonight.
