Who: Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman
Where: Movie Theater
When: Saturday, May 19, 2012 - 10:30 pm
What: The Movie Date
Rating: C - for cuteness
Status: Complete in gdoc
The theater was already darkening as Billy scanned the seats looking for somewhere to sit. He had everything he needed for the movie. The theater wasn’t particularly full, which wasn’t surprising. The movie they had ended up settling on was a special rerelease, so only the diehard fans of the film were there. Billy counted maybe eighteen people scattered throughout the theater. At least that made it easy to get seats. There were open seats where he would normally sit, which were in the bottom row of the auditorium seats, near the railing so he could put up his feet. He pointed, careful not to spill his drink, eyes floating toward Teddy for approval.
==
Teddy peered around the darkened theater, pupils widening to take in the seating arrangements available. He was carrying the huge tub of popcorn, and leaned down to nip up a piece as he followed Billy down the aisle. When the other boy pointed, he didn’t even look before flashing an approving smile and following him.
Gawd, Billy could have picked the worst seats, and he still would have grinned like an idiot and hurried after him, trying not to hum in happiness.
It had been agony waiting all Saturday for tonight. Even his mom had noticed his restlessness (he’d cleaned up most of the garden weeds, trimmed the hedges, and entirely unpacked and rearranged every single room while she was at work). It was the longest day ever.
Now, finally...! What movie was this again? Ah well. He didn’t care about the movie, anyway.
==
Teddy wasn’t the only one that had been climbing the walls. Billy’s normally tidy room currently looked like a hurricane had struck a department store. In the last twenty-four hours, he had probably tried on every single thing he owned, down to socks. If his parents had noticed his frenzied craziness though, they had remained blissfully silent.
Walking to their seats, Billy sat down and settled his drink in the small cupholder, wiping his hands on his jeans to dry off the condensation. And nervous sweat. There was probably that too. After he got settled, he shut off his phone and slid it into his pocket. Taking a deep breath, Billy tried to remain calm in the darkness. Even as previews flashed on the screen, he couldn’t help but clumsily sneak glances at Teddy beside him. Like a date. Billy’s mind whirled. Was this, in fact, a date? Was he having his first one and not even sure of it?
He reached over for some popcorn to calm his nerves. It was sitting... and watching... so why was his heart beating a mile a minute?
==
Teddy tried to keep his eyes ahead, the light of the previews flashing over his face. With the movie started, his nerves were starting to soothe a little. Still, the nervousness of their proximity, the scent of Billy’s freshly groomed hair, the small motions he caught out of the corner of his eyes--it was as though his senses were acutely overactive.
But he was still aware of what was on the screen. He laughed a little at the cheesy slapstick being advertised, leaning over to Billy to whisper casually. “That one looks so awful it might actually be good.”
==
Billy nodded as he munched on popcorn, washing it down with his drink before looking at Teddy. “It might be okay. You can never tell though from previews.” He had started to say something else, but the theater’s feature presentation cinematic was playing and the few other people that had been talking had hushed. Billy gulped down another swallow of his soda as the movie’s black screen gave way to a foggy forest and the brief silence was broken by ominous background music.
He hadn’t been lying when he had told Teddy that horror movies scared the crap out of him. What had he gotten himself into? The brief ambiance of the opening scene was already setting him a bit on edge. He glanced toward Teddy before shrinking in his chair, hands ready to cover his eyes at a moment’s notice.
==
Teddy chowed down a huge mouthful of popcorn as the screen went black. He was glad he was holding the tub on his lap. It meant those graceful, angular fingers had to drift his way now and then.
The opening scene was ominous. Ah yes, the hint of horror. A cute couple out on their own, things being way too perfect and cheerful. Teddy felt his ears heat as the couple playfully started removing clothing.
Aw, man... I knew this was rated R, but when will young couples learn to not be frisky in a horror movie? They always die! ….No, don’t dive into the water, you dummies!
Teddy held up a hand, counting down on five fingers as the music started to give its creepy, dark bass roll that ascended.
Splash! “Hey, what are you doing? … SHRIEEEEEEEK!”
Teddy’s head tilt back at the sudden start scene. He had to give the director kudos. That was well done! He looked over to Billy....
==
Well, that was unexpected! Billy had been watching one of the obligatory teen skinny dipping scenes with embarrassment burning his cheeks. Not because of the scene itself, but rather more because of where his mind was taking it. It only took a small stretch of his overactive imagination for the guy on the screen to be Teddy stripping down for a cool dip.
He’d almost completely lost himself in that fantasy when the kill erupted on the screen, heralded by blaring strings. A small, yet embarrassing shriek escaped his lips as he jerked his head away from the screen and toward Teddy, hands covering his eyes. Manly, Kaplan... It’s not even been 10 minutes yet and you’re already a quivering girl... perfect. He’d at least hoped to have a little bit of a lead up before he jumped for the first time.
==
And he ended up with a frightened Billy jumping away from the startling scene with what he likened to a yip.
Crap! WhatdoIdo? WhatdoIdo?
“Hey, hey... is this too much for you?” He put his arm around Billy, leaning in close so he could whisper without disturbing the others. It was going to a more “normal” scene now, the part of the movie where the protagonist gets introduced and more back story regulated.
“I can... I can give you my jacket if you want?”
==
I can give you my jacket if you want... Billy pulled his hands away from his face, intending to make a joke about not being cold, or just pretending, or just researching a role. His mind stopped though as he opened his eyes. Leaned in like he was, with his arm wrapped around Billy like half a hug, Teddy was all that Billy could see. And for that split second, he forgot about the movie, the theater, all of it - and that was perfectly fine.
As his mind started to slowly work again, Billy smiled and shook his head. “I’m fine,” he whispered back. “I just get jumpy when they throw the sudden shocks.” He adjusted himself so that he was more comfortable in the chair and reached for some popcorn. He took a breath and exhaled, smiled at Teddy one more time, and then turned back to the screen. Yeah, Teddy’s arm was still around his shoulders. He was okay with that...
==
Yeah...
That was a breathless moment. The light moved over Billy’s face, making his eyes glimmer as he stared back at Teddy. Not that Teddy realized he was holding his breath, brows bent in concern as he watched the other teen’s face calm under the frame of dark bangs.
Then that reassuring smile and whisper back that he was fine. Teddy smiled back, though still concerned. He pulled back to breathe (because it was way dangerous being in that close of proximity when this guy was making him melt into warm goo inside). He was about to remove his arm, but when Billy didn’t seem uncomfortable with it, and kept it there experimentally.
==
Billy watched the movie for another couple of minutes, his mind whirling. That had been a moment, hadn’t it? Yeah, that was a moment. It had to be. He’d never heard of any two straight guys acting like that. Teddy wasn’t moving his arm away either, so that had to be a good sign, right? Billy sighed and sipped on his drink, almost forgetting for a moment that they were watching a horror film... or even that there were others around.
==
The movie progressed. The protagonist was entering a house that seemed abandoned. Teddy knew what was going to happen already. This would be the startle scene where it would turn out to be something normal, like a jumping cat or someone coming onto the screen suddenly.
He slid his arm away reluctantly. The popcorn became balanced between his knees as he pulled off the light jacket and handed it over.
“It... will work better than your hands to cover up.” he explained awkwardly.
==
Billy curled his arms around the jacket, pulling it up his chest and resting his chin on its collar. He inhaled deeply and exhaled with a quiet sigh. Teddy’s jacket smelled faintly of his cologne. His was distracted though by the upbeat in music that signaled another shock. Before it even happened, Billy pulled Teddy’s jacked up over his nose, his brown eyes and hair barely peeking out from the collar.
When it passed though, he folded the jacket in his lap and pointedly pushed up the armrest between the two of them so it wasn’t in the way anymore. Risk it? He took a deep breath and then slid closer to Teddy, resting his head on the other teen’s shoulder.
==
He is way too freaking cute...
Teddy watched him sideways as he pulled up the jacket with a soft smile. Then he focused back on the plot of the movie, trying to figure out what had created the monster.
That was why horror movies didn’t bother him. He’d watched them so many times trying to figure out the monsters in them. So they didn’t thrill or frighten him.
But the feel of Billy shifting to move the arm rest made him freeze, staring ahead with as good of a poker face as he could manage. Then he leaned against him... that made his heart gallop. He looked down as the other pressed against his shoulder, then shifted ever so slightly to accommodate better. The popcorn was slid into the neighboring seat, and he pulled one of his legs up so his heel rest against the seat to tilt his weight back further.
This means... right? But then he supposed it didn’t really need to be said. He was relieved even though he was all flutters inside. And now he understood a craving he’d always missed but never experienced. It felt damned nice having someone in close proximity like this.
No, it felt damned nice having Billy in close proximity like this.
There was another shriek from the movie and a gruesome splatter of blood, and Teddy didn’t care a bit, just paying attention to Billy’s reactions and smiling.
==
Once Billy fully processed what he’d just done, and Teddy’s accepting reaction, he melted as well, grateful for the situation, but kind of surprised at his own audacity. For a fraction of a moment, he wondered what would have happened if he’d misread Teddy’s intentions. That quickly passed though as he acclimated to the feeling of Teddy’s shirt against his cheek.
He tensed for the briefest of moments at the splatter of blood that he’d not been paying full attention to, but then relaxed again like a cat perched in a lap. Were he capable, he might have actually purred. Instead though, he reached his far arm across Teddy to the popcorn and grabbed a small handful and plopped in his mouth before getting comfortable again. Besides the slightest of shifts, he stayed nestled against the larger teen, drinking more of him in than the movie itself, until the closing scenes flashed by and the credits started to roll.
==
Teddy helped Billy finish off the popcorn easily with his free hand, just enjoying the feel of the weight on his chest as he breathed. Whatever Billy used for shampoo was quickly becoming a favorite scent for him. The credits were rolling, and they still weren’t moving even as other people were getting up and leaving the theater.
He looked down as the haunting score started its trailing descent to the end. But what should he say? Instead he just smiled “I can see why they rereleased that one. That’s definitely a better one.” He gave Billy a lopsided smile. “You’re... not going to be able to sleep though, are you?”
==
Billy smiled and mumbled something into the fabric of Teddy’s shirt before finally looking up at him. “I... I think I’ll manage. Somehow.” His brown eyes shifted from a dream-like fugue, focusing on Teddy as the smile slowly dissipated from his face. Everyone was practically gone now. The lights were raising in the theater, and soon, the crews would be coming in to start cleaning. Billy’s panic mode set in. What if Teddy had just been humoring him? What if he just didn’t want to make a scene in the theater, but there was really nothing there at all?
His voice was quiet and a bit shaky as he took a deep breath. “So...”
==
“So... Let’s go walk,” Teddy said decisively.
He wasn’t ready to part ways just yet.
==
Billy’s smile returned, big and bold and flashing most of the teeth in his mouth, more than likely. He pulled himself off of Teddy’s chest and stood, stretching his arms high into the air as he did so. He folded Teddy’s jacket neatly on his arm before gathering the empty soda cup from beside him.
“Uh... Teddy,” He said after a moment, when they were the last two in the theater. he scratched the back of his neck with his free hand as his mind worked out what he was wanting to say. “I... had fun, and... I-I’d like to do it again? Because I think you’re...” Cute, amazing, super hot... those were the words Billy was looking for. The fact that he’d gotten the rest of them before that out, with how nervous he was all of a sudden.
==
Watching BIlly stretch was a nice treat. He was much sleeker than Teddy, who was stockier, and he could see the push of his ribs against his shirt, the angles of the shoulders and arc of the back. Be a gentleman, he sharply reminded himself, blue eyes forcing their way to Billy’s face before they explored lower.
He already knew he liked the rest, after all. He’d stolen enough looks...
He listened to Billy speak, blue eyes steady on him as he sipped away the very last of his soda. A warmth flooded his chest and a dance of thrilled nerves played in his core as he beamed at Billy.
“I like you, too.”
Wow, that just came out. He pursed his lips, a breath held in his chest briefly as his brows bent shyly.
“If you’re okay with that, that is...”
==
“I-um-I mean... yes?” Billy’s cheeks had to be burning red at this point. Teddy liked him. He actually said he liked him. Wow. Billy’s mind was about as able to function as his tongue apparently was. At least smiling was reflexive, and it almost hurt his cheeks. He looked away shyly as he slid around Teddy so that they could exit the row.
What was going to happen now? Billy was excitedly imagining all the possibilities. And then reality hit him like a truck. Magic. Loki. He looked longingly at Teddy’s adorable face as he sighed inwardly. He’d make that work somehow. He wasn’t about to chase off the super-cute boy next to him because of his own personal brand of weird.
==
Teddy felt like he was glowing with happiness. Billy’s bright blush only endeared him further. Did they need to mesh out what this was between them?
Teddy thought it went without saying, walking with him out of the theater. They could worry about all of that later...
