What: Terry comes to Kyle with a couple confessions.
Rating: Safe for Work
Leaning back in the chair of his small office at Feast Magazine, Kyle had his feet propped up on the desk and his fingers interlaced together behind his head. For the moment, his eyes were open, but every now and then he would lose focus, prompting them to close abruptly before he stirred himself awake once more. And so it had been for the past several hours. Though he actually enjoyed his job when he had time for it, he was more often than not overwhelmed by the expectations demanded of him recently, and having been away for so long did not help matters by any means. Because even though he had been back for a few months now, he felt as though he had hardly made a dent into a lot of his piles of assignments.
Sighing to himself, he leaned forward in his desk against his elbows, and was just in the process of deciding whether or not to run across the street for an energy drink when there was a knock on his door.
”Kyle, can I come in?”
“Yeah, sure”, Kyle replied upon hearing the voice of Terry Berg. Terry was his personal assistant, and more than that, his best friend. At least outside the world of superhero antics. It had been Terry who had been instrumental in helping Kyle to keep his job while he was away, going so far as to create a few panels himself for the weekly comic that they were responsible for producing. And while the quality had not been the same, it had been enough to keep their boss satisfied in the mean time.
“What's up?”
”Well”, Terry said as he closed the door, ”There is something that I have been meaning to tell you. For a long time, actually. Do you have a few minutes?”
Kyle arched a brow. He couldn't help it. Put as simply as it could get, there were no secrets between them. For a variety of reasons, Kyle had told Terry all about his other life as a Green Lantern. It helped to have someone outside of the Corps to talk about it with, and especially in this work situation, it paid off in dividends to have someone in the 'know.' Given the weight of that little secret that they kept between them, he could not fathom what Terry was about to say, as he leaned back again in his chair, fully attentive.
“Yeah, yeah... sure. What is it?”
Terry stood with his hands pushed deep into his pockets, and suddenly his eyes were downcast. The way his head was tilted, Kyle had a hard time making out his features with his bangs, but he did not have to see Terry's face to know that he was really nervous.
”Well...I uh... well you see...”
“...Yes?”, Kyle prompted.
”I'm gay.”
For longer than he intended, Kyle sat silent. And then he stood, coming around his desk with a little smile and as shake of his head.
“You're kidding me, right?”
”Uh. No. I'm not.”
“No, I mean... I mean, do you really think that I didn't know?”
Terry shifted his weight, and Kyle gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
“Terry, when I come in early and you don't think I am here yet, I catch you rocking out to Cher. Every day I see you, you wear pants so tight they look like they were painted on. And every time I have tried to peg you to come out clubbing with me, you have turned me down.”
Terry swallowed hard.
“Terry, I know you're gay. And have known, for quite some time. It's fine, man.”
”...So you don't have a problem with it then?”
“It's who you are, Terry. It makes no difference to me.”
Now, Terry grinned. And having regained some confidence, he retorted, ”And if I told you that I like you?”
Now it was Kyle's turn to shift his weight, but he did so with a smirk.
“I'd say that I was flattered, and leave it at that, I suppose.”
”Really?”
“Really.”
A moment passed in silence, before they both laughed and shook their heads.
“Hey Terry, I'm going to run across the street for a drink. You want anything?”
”No, I've got everything I need right here.”
Kyle shot him a look. “You know, I said I was alright with it. At no point did I give you permission to be a wise ass”, he chided as he made his way past Terry to the door.
“This Honeymoon will be over before it starts if you keep that up”, he said with a little grin as he disappeared out into the hall.
