WHO: Elizabeth & Prometheus
WHEN: June, 1842
WHERE: Boston
WHAT: A friendly proposition
Elizabeth was fairly new to the city of Boston, having made her way to the burgeoning city from down South. She had been there only days before coming across the Titan Prometheus, an immortal she had previously met in her court and had had removed forcibly when he proved to pay little attention to her rightful place as ruler above him.
But no longer was Elizabeth the monarch and her beloved homeland was far away and so was everyone she knew. These were feelings that Prometheus could relate to and in only a few months the two of them had struck up an unlikely friendship. Memory had given her a sense of humility she'd never had in life. The Victorian age demanded humility from women, even one they remembered as a holy queen above all others.
The day was warm when she made her way to Prometheus' home, rapping upon the door and waiting, her fan resting in her hand and her bright curls pinned up beneath her bonnet.
Prometheus had taken his banishment from court with good humor. He treated most mortals on an equal level and thus he rarely got along with royalty. So when he'd re-met Elizabeth he hadn't kept a grudge and just enjoyed having another immortal to talk to.
He kept to himself in this odd age, never good at trying to fit into morals that were against most of his being. When she knocked he'd been busy with his art, and half disheveled he went and opened the door. When he saw her he smiled, "Elizabeth, hello. I wasn't expecting company."

Elizabeth gave him a polite smile and said, "I hope I haven't interrupted your work. May I come in?" she gestured with her fan to the doorway before her.

He waved her concern away, "hardly. I had to remember to eat at some point." He nodded and stepped back, "of course, please. Come in. Can I get you anything?" He ran his hands through his hair to fix it a little before motioning her inside. "What bring you today?"

Elizabeth waited until they were seated in the study before they spoke, as this was something of a delicate matter and certainly nothing to be held in the corridor. "We've not known each other very long," Elizabeth began, "but we do share the unique position of being what we are. I'm sure you'll agree that with this comes certain complications when one chooses to live among mankind."

He shrugged, "there are always complications yes." He knew there were a few rumors going around about him and few felt he was 'good' society but he didn't really care. He had his art and his freedom. He needed very little other things. "What is troubling you?"

"I am finding my decision to remain unwed a difficulty," Elizabeth sighed. "Not for myself, as I have little interest in being beholden to any man. In the past I have been content to simply present myself as a wealthy widow, but alas this time I find I am attracting talk." She looked at Prometheus seriously. "I would like to propose a business arrangement of sorts."

He sympathized for her. This new age wasn't very kind on women. He could do as he liked, despite having a slight reputation, but he imagined she had it more difficult then he did. "I think I can guess where this is leading." He was clever at times, "And I am not the kind of being to let any mortal, or former mortal, suffer or have hardship if I can fix it. Lay out your rules Elizabeth, but be mindful what I do for a living. The talk will only shift a little."

"Even an artist is more respectable than a single young woman living on her own. I have had offers of interest from gentlemen and should I continue to refuse them I will only garner more talk about my character." And since Elizabeth's character was impeccable it was more than offensive to have people suggesting she was some sort of slattern behind her back.
"Prometheus, I would be most grateful if you would chose to enter into an act of deception with me, one that I believe will serve the both of us well. It won't be a real marriage, understand, and although it will be required that I come to live with you, we will not be sharing a bed and there shall be no... carnal activities." She reddened slightly at that and cleared her throat.

He chafed against all the restrictions because he was Greek. Most of what he liked was under secret, and it wasn't fun. Still her situation was worse. He managed not to laugh at her blush and hid a smile behind hsi hand. She wouldn't appreciate it and he knew she was out of options.
He didn't think she would have come here otherwise.
He held up a hand, "I wouldn't expect that from someone who had no interest in me that way. I'm a very unusual Greek." He smirked, "if you truly need my help Elizabeth I'll be glad to offer it. I make enough to keep us well looked after. All I ask is that you remind me to take a break now and again. I get very into my art."

"I will be happy to do that," Elizabeth told him with a nod and then she smiled. "This is very good, I'm glad you are agreeing to this." She folded her hands in her lap. "It will re required that we do this properly and although I would never usually take such an oath before the Lord that I do not truly mean - as I will not love or obey you - I know that He will understand that my need is dire."

He smiled now, "I would not ask either of you." He shrugged, "I could not say no. Once you were mortal. In a way you are still part of that. I can never say no to that." He leaned forward and went to set his hand on hers. "I'll arrange everything, just come up with an excuse and a reason or something and I'll get you settled in here. I'll need a few days to clear out a room for you." He didn't keep much company and she would need her comfort, "besides you would not be the only one telling a lie in that one." He did not believe in her God. As a titan, it was a bit hard to do. "And your God will understand."

"There is time," Elizabeth told him. "We cannot just marry - it's not proper. You must appear to court me before you propose marriage or it would not be believable. But it will be a simple enough deception for me to tell others that we have been meeting quietly for a few months. Nothing shameful, simply walks in the park and perhaps a meal. But now we must make those meetings more public," Elizabeth mused, considering how it all should be done. "There is a dance coming up. It might be prudent if you were to invite me to it."

"Then I invite you," he was hardly fond of social things but this was a good thing for her. and he could be charming if he wanted to be. "And well if we've been meeting one another for the last few months I wouldn't have let you get far without a gift." Smiling he rose and dug through a drawer, returning with an elegant bracelet and offering it to her. "I was going to give this to my daughter when I found her again, but it seems she's busy. And I doubt she'll mind if you have it."

"It's beautiful," Elizabeth said, admiring the bracelet. "Thank you, Prometheus. Help me put it on, won't you?" she asked, holding out her slender wrist to him with a smile. "And thank you," she said even more sincerely, "for doing this for me. I don't believe that I will make a good wife, but I can cook and I can manage a household very well."

Laughing he set the bracelet around her wrist, "funny because that's the thing I think I need most. I don't go out much on my own and I forget the things society expects me to do." Smiling he took her hand and kissed the back of it. "I'll try to be as charming as I can and don't mention it. Now tell me about this dance and how much I'll shock people by being an artist."

"I'm sure they won't all be shocked," Elizabeth told him with a smile, watching him do the clasp up on her wrist and demurely accepting the kiss with a nod. "Artists have become quite the commodity at the moment. It seems that every high society woman wishes to have an artist to swoon over. Your kind are considered to be a somewhat dangerous delight, I believe. Fortunately," Elizabeth added, "the family I have made claims to come from are of high standing and so you will elevate my status as a married woman as I elevate yours as your wife."

"oh, I'm a commodity. I do like those," his smile told her he was teasing, "I'm not looking to get a boost in the social politics of mortals. It confuses me so I'll just be my charming self and make everyone jealous." He sat down once the bracelet was on, "you'll be alright with me setting an arm around you on occasion? If I'm to pretend with this I cannot be anyone but myself."

"Of course," Elizabeth nodded seriously. "We must appear to everyone to be a happily wedded couple. Although bear in mind that affection in public is not the norm of this time as it may have been in yours. These mortals keep their emotions tightly bottled."

"Casual touches, nothing more. Enough to convince everyone I'm completely taken by you. I'll keep to the rules, don't worry about that." Smiling he leaned back in his seat, "so this party. Would you like me to pick you up or meet you there?"
