Rummaging in his pocket, Avery pulled out a candle. "Come on, we're going to find the room with the best reaction and try to communicate there," he said, looking up the stairs. They walked from room to room, Avery noting the tiniest of fluctuations. One of the upstairs bedrooms had a broken window. A ball sat against the wall where it had come through, and he looked at it, swinging his EMF around.
The silence was stretching, so when the EMF bleeped it make Avery start. "Oh! a three!" he said, and set the candle down carefully on a forgotten dresser with broken drawers. He lit it, and stepped back.
"Amanda Garrick, if you're here, blow out this candle," he commanded. The flame flickered, but didn't go out. "Amanda, show yourself!"
Downstairs, there was a sound, as a single discordant note from the piano echoed up the stairs.
