There was something about his complete wariness that set Marian at ease. She was so used to him being blustering and huge and over-confident that seeing him anything less so was a surprise, and a pleasant one.
That inner voice had been right. Time had changed so much about her and sometimes in ways she couldn't understand or predict, so why not him too? Maybe this wasn't her enemy. Not here, not now. They were just two people from some old stories.
