WHO: Thomas and Jamie Kemp WHAT: A November trip to the foodbank and general cuteness WHEN: Jamie is 8ish which makes Thomas 23-24ish WHERE: Their house and then the foodbank WARNINGS: Discussion of poverty
Life had been a little better since Jamie had started school. Thomas had decided to go back to University and his student loans not only paid for that, but he was able to pad out his paychecks when necessary. Every so often, however, car payments or insurance payments or repair fees meant Thomas still came up short. If necessary, Thomas would send Jamie to his parents' house to make sure the boy didn't go without. That was a last resort, however, and before that had to occur, there was always the food bank.
Thomas and Jamie qualified for fifteen items between them, once a month. After the heat pump in their apartment broke, Thomas had to shell out to fix it or freeze. Unwilling to let his son go without heat in the winter, Thomas chose and inevitably their supplies were dwindling and he had used their last food stamps a few days ago. He was just glad they got to spend Thanksgiving at his parents' house so he didn't have to worry about it.
"Jamie?" It was a Saturday and his son was in his little bedroom which was essentially a closet. Thomas called it his cave and though Jamie loved it, Thomas hoped they could afford to move when he finally finished his course. Jamie deserved a real room, especially as he continued to grow. The apartment they currently had was a studio, and Thomas moved into the bedroom area, waiting for the closet door to push open.
