Who:Clio and Euterpe
What:The Muses had their first encounter, and performance, with their Father
When:Ancient Greece, just after the fall of the Titans and after the big celebration dinner
Where:The Muse Mountain (Mount Parnassus)
All of the Muses were still young. They had just learned what they were and what their tasks were, and just when they felt comforted by this fact their mother had pulled them aside and made them dress nice. They had not known what for, only that Mnemosyne had told them to look their best. Clio, curious even then, had asked why.
She shouldn't have, really, because once she'd known they'd meet their father and sing for their victory she'd been nervous.
They'd still gone and done it, and to hear the Nine in chorus was a treat indeed.
When they'd come home, Clio felt shaky because Father was rather intimidating. They'd been introduced, all Nine of them, and she'd ducked her head to keep from being noticed. Even now, at home, she still felt a bit awed. Olympus was...big compared to the little home they had here. She preferred her little home.
Now, with a sigh, she sat down and ran her fingers over the scrolls that were already so familiar to her. She was missing something still (the laurels would not be hers for a little while yet), but it comforted her.

While Clio may have ducked and hid from their father's eye, Euterpe had glowed within it, smiling overly-brightly at the Sky King who seemed to completely fill the room. She'd curtsyed to him and really really wanted to hug him. But instead she sang for him as best as she could, wanting him to be impressed with her.
She was still riding on the high of excitement from it all when she came to find Clio. (She was her favourite big sister but she wouldn't tell the others that. It was a secret.)
"Clio!" she bounced, coming to join her with a grin. "Clio! Did you see how big his hands were?"

When she heard the bouncy steps and voice she smiled. She couldn't help so around Euterpe, nor Thalia. And she knew Euterpe had made them better. She sat up and brushed her discomfort off, "Euterpe!" She grinned and nodded, "I did. And the lightning bolts were very neat too." she shifted so her sister could sit and glanced to the box with scrolls. There'd be time for that later.
"You did very well. I know he's proud of us all, but you made us better. We'd not carry a tune without you."

Euterpe beamed Clio. Compliments from her older sisters always left Euterpe feeling like she must be wonderful to receive such praise. She was glad to give her Music to them all, because they were a team and together they were going to bring the world such happiness. It was a big job and it scared Euterpe a bit, but it was exciting as well and important.
"I hope I can always help," Euterpe told her big sister. "There's so much we have to do and... it's a bit scary, isn't it?" She looked at Clio from under her lashes, trying to see if it was scary or if it was just Euterpe.

She smiled, taking her sister's hands, not minding letting her see her own fear. "Yeah it is scary, but look we've got Nine of us right? And you've got your Dance," gently she released Euterpe's hand to run her fingers through her sister's hair. "We'll be alright. We've got each other to fall back on if we get lost." She smiled and kissed her sister's head, "you do always help, and always will."

Euterpe bathed like a cat in the physically affection from her sister and smiled contentedly. "Will we get to see our father-king again soon?" she asked Clio hopefully. She'd liked him. She wanted more already. She wanted to show him how she'd mastered the double-flute that she'd just been given.

She drew back to braid her sister's hair, felling herself relax. "I don't know my little songbird. I expect he will call us when we are needed. We can aspire to be good daughters for him, and make him proud so when we do see him we can raise our chins." Smiling she glanced to Euterpe, "now show me what you've been given and how good you are with it."

Euterpe loved the sound of making their father proud. She wanted that more than anything in the whole world now. All the Gods of Olympus were so beautiful and... shining and she wanted them to all smile at her and be made happy by her music.
"I'll go get it!" Euterpe said, bouncing up to her feet and managing not to lose any hair in Clio's hands. "I'll come right back!" She darted off in the direction she'd come from, collecting her new flute before running back to her big sister. "See!" she said, sitting down in front of her again. "Isn't it pretty?"
