Kaden watched the smoke ring go, till his eyes could no longer pick up where it ended and the sky behind began. Watching that was easier than thinking about the differences between being a boy and a dog, but he still felt compelled to say something about it. "Can't run as fast," he muttered, and dropped his eyes from the smoke ring to look at something else instead. His eyes found the edge of a planter box, thick with winter herbs, and he ran his finger over the lightly carved symbols in the wood round the edges. He'd asked Hecate what the symbols did, once. She said they remind disease it has somewhere else to be.
"Food's better, though," Kaden heard himself carry on, and even the mention of food made him a little hungry. Did they have any leftover pizza in the fridge? Not that he wanted to turn around and go back to his room and find out. No, he wanted to know what Merlin was doing here. Why the door had led him up here. What was going on.
