"We're not, uh, totally sure," Lyra said, and when she said it she winced because it felt like she was admitting to being, like… well like the kinda dickhead that bought spas for his mates, that had a helicopter for fun— you know, that guy. "We spent quite a bit the night of. But. Well. That," she said, nodding at the note. "That's fifteen hundred and thirty five.”
She wished she could sound offhand and cool, but no way. It was too much to be cool about. The whole… the whole thing was too much to be cool about. She knew it. Rosario would know it. Fifteen hundred dollars required a bit of gravity.
“Me and Aves, we split it down the middle," she said, talking fast. "And then I split my half, and half of that went to Jocelyn, then split what was left; half for you and half for me. I was gonna split it straight between you and Jocelyn,” she added, not looking at Rosario’s face, looking at the roll of money in her hand instead. “Cuz like, I can just work and don’t haveta focus on school, and you gotta be focusing on school ‘stead of working your ass off, but then like…” An awkward shift here before she spoke again. “I kinda wanna build up my toolkit into something really useful? Plus I haven’t bought a new bra in like, a year and a half…” she laughed, but it was still a little awkward. Still sounded like she was picking bras over, like, Rosario’s education. Still felt guilty that she was keeping any.
