WHO: Makaria & Hades
WHEN: Sunday afternoon
WHERE: Hades' non-underworldy house.
WHAT: Father and daughter bonding times first scene thingy
In the beginning it had been good. Persephone had stayed and instead of having to wait for winter to return, Makaria got to keep the woman who was the closest thing to a mother that she knew. The Iron Queen was firm and commanding but she was also loving and warm and all that Makaria had ever known. And she made Hades happy. Makaria had never known love herself, having spent most of eternity among the dead, but she recognized it between her parents.
So when Persephone had stayed Makaria had been happy about it, but it didn't take very long for that happiness to sour. Slowly, it seemed, Makaria's mother grew cold, grew cruel. The goddess who had always been a guiding hand to Makaria now made cruel offhand comments that landed against Makaria like she'd been hit. She had been treated for so long with great respect by the heroes in the Isles of the Blest, and by the denizens of the Underworld, that she didn't even know how to deal with cruelty from Persephone.
But Makaria remained silent. Her father was happy and it didn't seem like he saw what was happening. She wouldn't steal from Hades what little joy he could find. Instead she avoided her winter-mother and felt, perhaps, that she was learning why Persephone was not her summer-mother. Laws were laws and Makaria didn't like this woman she hid from.
She let her bodyguard Achilles take her out with him to the places he had to go, promising that she'd remain quiet and out of the way if he would. She spent her time at the movies, the theater, the museums, the art galleries. This city was full of things to occupy her time and when she had to return home she hide herself away in the library with a cup of tea and the knowledge of mankind filling her head.
That was where Makaria was today when she heard movement in the hallway outside. She lifted her head from the novel in her lap - The Great Gatsby - and waited anxiously, hoping it would not be Persephone.
Hades had honestly not wanted to see the changes in his wife. He'd ignored them, pretended everything was fine and nothing would change further. But he saw her turn crueler, into a woman he barely recognized.
The fact he could have no happiness, that the very thing he ruled would change the very woman he loved dearer then life, was enough to have him accept Zeus offer. Something had to be done. Still if Hermes would hurt Persephone, he'd take his anger out on both of them.
And his realm did need him. He could hear it whisper for it's Lord and its jailer. And he'd seen how it was hurting his little girl, the daughter he'd kept safe since she was a tiny bundle in his arms. Makaria earned no cruelty from anyone.
With a sigh he followed Cerberus to the girl. The hound was coming back now Hades had stopped being a love blind fool, and Hades didn't want to guess where the dog had been. He'd forgive the slip of the leash. At least he hadn't needed to call Heracles to fetch him back. Straining for a smile he walked to where his daughter was sitting, glancing to the title before sitting beside her. "I am a foolish old man."

Makaria frowned a little, watching the lines on her father's face sadly. "Why, papa?" she asked, reaching out her hand and placing it on his. She suspected she already knew what this was about though.

"Because I wanted something too far out of my reach, and caused you pain through it." Happiness wasn't for him, not for long. He had winter. A few short months of wondering how long Persephone would be war of him this time, or if she'd love him still.
He envied his Egyptian friend for what even Hades couldn't have. Instead he smiled and kissed her hand, "so forgiveness daughter. I've agreed to have things put right. The Iron Queen will go to her mother, and in winter you'll have your mother back."

"I wanted you to have her," Makaria told him, and her voice was sad and quiet. "I wanted you to have that happiness, but this woman... she isn't Persephone any more. I don't know who she is. I'm sorry, papa. You both deserve to be happy."

"I know precious, which is why I'm asking for forgiveness." Few would ever see Hades like that. They saw the Lord of the Dead in a certain way, and would be hard pressed to see him as the doting father he truly was. "But it's gone on long enough. Now Demeter's gone and killed a Ker." Sighing he shook his head. "I was blind and foolish. Not even I can fight fate." He wanted a drink, but later, where she couldn't see him.
He shook his head, wanting a different topic. "Achilles still treating you well?"

"You're already forgiven," Makaria said with a small smile. "Without question. I understand why you did it all." Makaria had never been in love but spending her time with so many dead heroes, she'd certainly heard love talked about as a great motivation enough times. She had sat and listened to men talk about how they had killed for love, died for love, fought armies and built cities, all for that desire. How could she fault her own father for falling victim to the same thing?
She nodded to her father's question, glad to be away from the idea of Demeter killing people. That wasn't right. "He's taking me to the Met on Thursday," she told Hades. "He's a little difficult to take at times, but I think I'm managing to temper his moods."

He knew she would. Part of him wanted her to find someone nice that could show it all to her, but love wasn't always kind. It could be bitter and painful. That and he'd eviscerate anyone foolish enough to even think about hurting her heart. "I know precious."
"Remind him what you are. You are kin to him, and a goddess. You're far cousins, but if he's rude don't suffer it." He knew Achilles' arrogance. Even when he'd died and found himself being judged he was still saying how he shouldn't even be dead.
Every hero seemed foolhardy that way. "But I'm glad he is keeping you occupied. I'll have more time soon. I have to set things right. Tell him to be careful though. The pantheon is restless." And he didn't trust Poseidon. "and if your uncle the sea king comes near you, do us all a favor and bring him back to my realm. I won't have him touch you." He was adamant about that. Poseidon would think the suffering he'd endured on his previous journey was but a vacation trip if he dared to hurt Hades' daughter.

"I understand how to deal with Achilles," Makaria promised her father with a small smile. "You forget my whole life has been with the heroes. I understand their minds better than I understand anyone else." Besides, if Achilles decided to start being overly rude to her, Makaria was sure she could find ways to make him behave. She was the keeper of the land of the blessed.
"I don't think Poseidon will come near me," Makaria said with a shake of her head, thinking about it. "I'm below his notice." As a minor goddess Makaria rarely felt that most of the other gods even remembered she existed, but she didn't mind that at all. She had no desire for greatness.
"But," she added with a comforting smile, "I will be careful."

"I know I forget. You are my only daughter. I'm allowed to forget," in his mind he was sure that the only reasons the Heroes had kept their paws to themselves was the threat of what Hades would do to them if they dared to look at his daughter in a certain way.
He sighed, somewhat glad that she didn't see her own beauty. "Perhaps, but I am not below notice. I know my brother. He'll do what he likes to think to hurt me." He was glad for the promise, wishing he could do more. But he could trust her, he knew that. He drew her clsoe and set a kiss on her head, "thank you."

Makaria smiled at him, resting her cheek against his shoulder after he kissed her. "I'll be very careful," Makaria promised. "I'll keep under his radar." (She'd only just learned about radar. It was amazing, but she didn't think Hades would be interested in hearing about it. It was one of those things people living in this world already knew about and she didn't.)
"I love you, papa," she said to him. She knew that everyone would be okay, even after Persephone left. She'd look after him.

"I know precious, and I love you." He knew a few gods who would fall over at seeing Hades like this, but they saw too much the cold Lord of his realm, not the father he had always tried to be around Makaria. It was part of the reason he wanted another, but he doubted it would happen.
