It was pretty out of character for Avery to do much more than scowl and roll his eyes at the dinner table when he was visiting his family, so for him to be smiling and playful... Duffy Sr. wasn't sure what to do with it. Never really knew what to do with his middle child at the best of times, aside from ask him basic questions about how much he was earning these days and had he kept an eye on the stock markets lately, and then turn to Xander to get into the meaty political talk. Dannielle had a frozen rictus grin on her face, refusing to let herself look ruffled in the least by this invading creature she'd invited into her home.
Avery himself was quite amused by how the tables had turned. He'd never known that having dinner with his family could be a pleasant experience, actually. Lyra in her bright homemade top, sticking out like a glow stick amongst these dull people, was really bringing some life to the party. He didn't care that every time Lyra did something a little loud, he was the one that got reprimanded. Why should he? Lyra was making things better for them both.
Except, well, when Duffy started talking about a housing project he was overseeing and mentioned a couple of the clever bureaucratic tricks they were pulling to prevent people of the wrong sort from being able to move in, and expected everyone at the table to agree with him…
