Behind them, Hope spoke up. She’d been looking in another stall so they hadn’t seen her, but heard them come in. She was curious about this new girl of Avery’s. As far as she knew, he’d never actually had a girlfriend before, or their mother would’ve said something.
Avery turned as she spoke, and he gave her a nod. “Hey. We just wanted to see the horses,” he said, jerking his thumb at the stall. Hope nodded, her eyes on Lyra. She and Avery had quite a few mannerisms in common, notably how self-contained they could be, and how focused on their interests. Hope was better at making eye-contact though.
“Hi,” she said, sticking out her hand to Lyra. “You must be Lyra. I’m Hope. Nice to meet you.”
