The bright colours of the wrappers were interesting, and Marcie hesitated before choosing a pink one, because she wanted to try more. "Thanks," she said, carefully unwrapping the foil. She chewed the chocolate slowly, enjoying the flavour, and smoothed the foil under her fingers, pressing out the wrinkles.
"There was another thing, when I got checked up for... afterwards," she said, keeping her voice low and even. "About a year ago, I was ill. I had tumors in my stomach, it was... awful." She glanced up at Cathal a moment, then back down at the shiny plastic wrapper. "It turns out that, even though the tumors are gone, they damaged me. I might not- I mean, I probably will never be able to give birth to my own child." Her voice grew lower as she spoke, the reality of that growing a little nearer in telling someone about it. She swallowed hard, and reached for another chocolate, but couldn't quite manage to eat it.
