Marcie gave Kaden an exasperated stare. "No, it's just-"
She had vivid memories of long hours spent alone in a hospital, shoved into a side room until a doctor was free enough to see her and tell her that yes what she thought was happening was happening, and she should go home and wait it out and come back if things took a turn. The doctor had looked at her over his glasses and said, "God works in mysterious ways," and she'd just stared back, too shocked to realise what exactly he'd meant. But she was sixteen and experiencing the end of her pregnancy, and he was in his 50s and thought he was helping by telling her it was for the best.
She'd been further along then than she was now. And she'd wanted to end it anyway, but- but saying it out loud to someone was just...
"Some painkillers maybe," she acceded, relenting in the face of Kaden staring right back at her.
