Lyra nodded in answer to her first question, taking a seat in answer to her second, and skipped over the third to answer the forth. "Oh she's great, uh, kicking ass and taking names..." Should she say ass, in front of a woman making pastry? Especially a woman with full on magic powers?
Maybe she'd reel the language in a little, though answering the third question was going to be harder without swearing. "We been... going through some stuff, lately," she trailed off as Johnny set down a tray of painted earthenware mugs on the table in front of them, creamy milk in a small jug and a little container of sugar that looked like it might talk to her at the slightest provocation. Lyra tried to slide her eyes away from it and look up at Johnny, but the sight of him and Elaine was affecting her more than she'd anticipated, her heart racing like they were still on the run.
"You sounded pretty stressed when we spoke on the phone," Johnny said with a nod, his eyes going to Rosario to wonder if she was the best-friend-who-didn't-believe-her in question. "Can hardly blame you for that, though. Rough start to the year an' all."
"Things've changed since then— since last night, even. Rosario believes me, now, and there's just shi- stuff happening in our lives we don't even really know how to start thinkin' bout and oh I bought chocolates!" She scrambled for the box, passing it over to Johnny.
"Brilliant, we love sweet treats, thank you kindly," Little John said as he accepted the box, and stood to put it down on the bench on his way to pour hot water into one pot for the coffee and another for the tea, giving Elaine a kiss on her hair as he passed behind her. "Things do change fast, don't they? I trust nothing's coming snapping at your heels right this second?" he asked, and Lyra cast her eyes over her shoulder as if there might be something there.
"I don't think so," she said, feeling a little sheepish about looking.
"You lasses are safe here," Little John reassured them. "Take a few deep breaths each, have some tea, have some coffee, we can work out where to start once you've settled."
