"One can never be sure of anything, but it's the best starting point we've got," Hecate said, with a nod of acknowledgement that perhaps it would all come to nothing. "If the apartment is empty, we set up a trap. We'll gather things from the house that may have a link to the demon and we use those to try and track it, and if it comes down to a hunt, then we'll call in Artemis, Apollo. Even Ares. We can't leave a demon who can steal a gods face loose in the city. Think of the damage it could cause. The hysteria."
The hysteria. That was the part that chilled Hecate the most. Already furious and deeply disturbed by what the demon had put Luna, Peitho and Hermes through, it was the potential for even worse damage she was thinking of now. The way the gods and immortals of this city could turn on each other in paranoia, knowing that one of their own could be replaced and they wouldn't even know. It was something she'd seen play out throughout history, over and over again.
And here was another reason she didn't want to let Clementine out of her sight: what if she passed the child to someone for safe keeping, but then it wasn't her who turned up later to pick Clementine up? No. Dangerous as it might be, they were moving as one tonight.
