Lyra was already regarding Nat with awe for her attitude; there was no 'the customer is always right' culture in this shop and it was so refreshing Lyra was tempted to ask if they had a job going, even though fitting in a third would be a challenge. But the vibe in here was fantastic; they were as unflappable as they were kind and Lyra wanted to be a part of it. And then Nat turned her hoop and Lyra saw what she was working on and her mouth opened in pure delight.
Lyra suddenly wanted to be in two places at once; she wanted to be right here, witnessing the next thing that Nat was going to do, and she wanted to be with Rosario, telling her how she'd met the woman she wanted to be when she grew up. Any other things she was worrying about telling Rosario could get right to the back of the line, thank you very much.
Another thing that appealed about working here: apparently, you got to look through people's stuff. Lyra's curiosity made her inch the chair closer to the box so she could peer in, leaving the tea towel on her lap and rubbing her hands dry on the sides of her pants. "My mom was obsessed with that book when I was like, ten? I don't know if she hard out believed the conspiracy or if she was just doing it to get at grandma's goat but she would not let it be. The fights we had over it! Can I help unpack?" she asked, showing them her hands, now blood-free.
