Marcie's heart hurt for him and she got off her chair to kneel beside him on the floor. "I don't know either," she said shakily, tentatively putting her arms around his shoulders. When she met no resistance, she wrapped him up tightly, holding him as closely as she could. She rubbed his back gently, unconsciously soothing him the same way her mother had soothed her when she was a child.
