"Ah-" Shit, Hecate had done all of the paperwork they needed, right? She'd thought things would be quiet over the summer, and wouldn't need to get complicated until school enrollments happened. Kaden wasn't even the name on his ID, and she fully blanked on it for a too-long moment.
"Yes," she said, pulling out her driver's license to show the constable. "Kaden is a nickname, his real name is Matthew Selznick. Don't ask me to explain the nickname, it's way too long a story." She shrugged and laughed a little, her eyes drawn to the sight of Kaden hunched up in the office. She wasn't surprised that Kaden had struggled, though. He didn't like the idea of the law getting involved in anything, and he certainly wouldn't have liked being confronted, no matter how well-meaning.
Marcie looked back at the officer, looking contrite. "I'm sorry. He lost someone very close to him recently and he hasn't been able to deal with it very well. We had an argument and he kinda lost it and ran off. Is he in a lot of trouble?"
