"One sec," Rosario said. Her eyes were on the microfilm reader, so she missed entirely the expression on her friend's face. She made a quick note in her diary of where she'd gotten up to in the newspapers before hitting the rewind button, sending the film reel hurtling backwards at top speed. "You could help with the directories, too. There's a bunch of editions; they're like the pre-internet way of finding out what happened to everyone in your class. If we're lucky they'll give us job titles, contact info, that kinda thing."
The film reached its end and the now-full reel continued to spin until Rosario caught it, removed it and slid it back into its grey archival box. She set it on top of a small stack of similar boxes, which she deposited neatly on top of the reshelving trolley before turning to the heavy volumes she'd pulled from the stacks earlier. She passed one to Lyra.
