The doors were being closed and fastened securely. Marcie didn’t try to speak to Kaden, but she did give him a quick smile as she leaned over a bit to look out of the window. She felt a mix of nerves and excitement at this, and on a level she wasn’t quite ready to admit to, relief. They were leaving the chaotic and unpredictable gods behind, and going to a world of stability and safety. Let this be their haven for a while, their sanctuary, until they had healed enough to face the city once more.
A man in a business suit stopped by their row of three and Marcie stiffened, remembering there would be a stranger sitting next to her. The man sat, breathing heavily but trying not to- clearly, he’d had to run to the gate. He threw a glance over the two younger people beside him, but then settled back with his Airpods in, determined to ignore them for the rest of the trip. Well, that suited Marcie just fine.
The engines were whirring, the sound filling the cabin with an all-encompassing hum, and a jolt meant the plane was backing out of the terminal. Marcie took a shaking breath, and almost felt like crying.
