Much looked pretty casual, but underneath he was focusing hard. His ability to sense other immortals wasn’t great, but it was something he had that Marcie and Kaden didn’t, something that might give them a split second advantage they wouldn’t have on their own. He couldn’t sense anything though, but that didn’t mean he was being any less alert.
He’d thought about getting the whole team in on this, scout the route earlier, set lookouts, move as a pack, but New York was currently swarming with people heading to work and school - the whole of humanity was moving as a pack. Much was counting on them being invisible because there were far too many other people to look at, and who knew, if they had a whole band of immortals helping them out that might just draw more attention than not.
So he was just a man with a van, ordinary as anyone else. Even the number of suitcases Marcie was bringing didn’t look too ridiculous split between three of them.
A bang as they walked through the basement made him turn around - not an alarming bang but a quiet one, like someone had bumped into something.
Kaden had split off from them, drawn to Tragos’ car the next row over, and bounced his fist down on the trunk, like he could fistbump a car, even though it was covered like it was ready for bed. Or like a funeral shroud.
No, not that. Kaden frowned deeply at himself. Fuck he thought such stupid things sometimes.
Kaden felt even more stupid wanting to say goodbye a car, but it tore him up inside leaving it. He didn’t know what else to do. Could he just walk past it on the way to Much’s van? Ignore it like he wasn’t super aware that they’d walk past it? He didn’t think anyone was going to make fun of him but he also felt exposed, like it’d be super obvious how loud all his feelings were about this stupid car. About his stupid brother.
He didn’t say anything out loud, just bumped his fist against the car and took a moment, turned away from the others so his hood hid his face.
Up ahead, Much paused with Marcie, sharing a glance with her. They weren’t in a rush, he’d allowed plenty of time for New York traffic, so taking a moment was fine, but he did raise his eyebrows at Marcie, curious about what she was thinking.
