"She means that in a gentle way," Hecate reassured Kaden, in case he did understand everything they were saying, but Kaden was still consumed by the baby seat, whining deep and low in his throat (audible, now that he was less likely to draw attention.) Hecuba shuffled closer, and lay her head across his back, and he turned and buried his face against her.
Directions were simple, there seemed to be two roads into this town - in and out - and once they were heading South there weren't many opportunities to get lost. It was strange to be a passenger; Hecate was so used to travelling on her own, but it was a strangeness she was grateful for. She was so tired, it was going to be easy to fall asleep against the seatbelt.
But she'd promised Morgan answers once they got moving. "The car seat belonged to Ares' son," she said, watching Kaden in the rear view mirror for signs of distress when she said Ares' name. Nothing - he had found a position half buried beneath Hecuba and wasn't budging. "Kaden took the baby and almost made it out of the country before Ares caught up with him. Ares took the baby home and left Kaden almost dead, I found him before he could slip away entirely. He's not a bad person, kidnapping aside. Just one in deep, deep over his head."
